4.0 out of 5 stars The truth shall set you free indeed..., 4 Feb 2004
By RM (London Colney, HE UK) - See all my reviews
(TOP 1000 REVIEWER)
Dedijer's meticulous book describes the atrocious Ustashi regime in Croatia during WW2. Complete with photographs, original documents and other important evidence, this book is far too important to go out of print, since it is one of the few books which go into great detail about the Ustashi regime.

As Dedijer shows, large sections of the Catholic clergy were involved in the genocide of Serbs, Jews, and Romanies, encouraging, blessing genocidal psychopaths and even participating in the orgy of violence, destruction and misery, such as Friar Miroslav Filipovic-Majstorovic or "Friar Satan", who was commandant of the dreaded Jasenovac concentration camp.

All of those people who claim that Dedijer's book is telling lies, exaggerating or is anti-Catholic, simply refuse to believe historical truth. As a reviewer before me stated, there would be an uproar if Germans reviwed a book about the destruction of the European Jews and claimed that it was "telling lies" or it was "anti-German". For those of you who want to know the truth about the largely forgotten genocide in the Independent State of Croatia during WW2, look no further than this excellent book.

4.0 out of 5 stars An important piece of history., 21 Nov 2003
By A Customer
As neither a serb or croat I read this book and believe that this piece of history should not be dismissed nor forgotten. It is a vital that we all never forget this (sadly ignored) genocide that happend during the second world war. It may be rather long winded with spelling and grammer mistakes in this english translation, but I would recommend it to any patient reader who is interested in the historical and cultural documentaion of this subject. It is a shame that some reviewers have had to review it in a racist slur(against the Serb author)by questioning the truth of this book,as this would be a libelous claim if it was Germans denying killing the Jews.

4.0 out of 5 stars Account of little known genocide, 22 April 1998
By A Customer
Although Dedijer is a Serb his account of the Catholic Church's role in the Jasenovac concentration camp it is a fair account of this less well known genocide. While there is great uncertainty about the number of Jews and Serbs killed at Jasenovac, a debate which has been heated up further by the conflict in the former Yugoslavia, Dedijer refrains from exaggeration or generalizing statements. The only drawback is that the book is at times rather sluggish reading and Dedijer could well have included more personal accounts of the genocide without loosing in objectivity. I recommend this book to anyone who wishes to understand the roots of hatred and fear in the former Yugoslavia and to people interested in the many 'other' genocides which took place in Europe during WW II.
