5.0 out of 5 stars detailed read of talented actor, 27 Aug 2005
By Mr. A. E. Ward Davies (Canterbury , England) - See all my reviews
(TOP 500 REVIEWER)    (REAL NAME)
This is one book that i have always wanted to read.
Sadly, there is very little written material about the great Basil Rathbone. There are second-hand copies of a biography published about him in the 70s, but £160 is rather a heavy price.
Rathbone has written his memoirs with the correct balance of fact, humour, and detail.Reading about his films as Sherlock Holmes, merely confirms yet again in my mind that he is THE ONE AND ONLY actor who can bring such a character to life so convincingly and methodically(with Peter Cushing coming a close second).Puts Jeremy Brett's girl's blouse interpretion to shame, although he is O.K.
Book is about 276 pages actual text plus several pages of photos.
Apart from his career, Rathbone has also written in great detail his time at school plus his various experiences during World War One.
Finally, this book had been out of print for many years since it was originally published in 1956. Then about three years ago it surfaced again.Buy it whilst you can and treasure it.

4.0 out of 5 stars Elementary, my dear Basil, 5 Jun 2008
By Kona (Emerald City) - See all my reviews
(TOP 50 REVIEWER)
Written at the age of 70, Basil Rathbone's autobiography is as eloquent and sophisticated as he was. He describes in detail his childhood, army life during WWI, and early stage experience before coming to Hollywood to make movies, but more than anything it is a tender tribute to his beloved wife and soul mate, Ouida.

Having read the reviews here, I knew there wouldn't be much detail or insight into the Sherlock Holmes movies (my favorite Rathbone role), but I was still disappointed and amazed at the hatred he felt for the character. After 16 movies, he became so identified with Holmes that his serious movie career was effectively over. He felt the role was cartoonish and common compared to the many classical and literate roles he played and much preferred acting in challenging parts on the stage.

He sometimes writes in agonizing detail about people I didn't know and those sections were a challenge to finish, but overall, I found the book quite interesting, an intimate look at a passionate husband, actor, and writer whose work I have long enjoyed.
