5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent biography of a troubled but wonderful star, 13 Jun 2002
By C. Jarvis "crisso" (United Kingdom) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
I had been an admirer of Miss Arthur's for some years but didn't know much about her until I read this book - the first ever biography written about this reluctant yet wonderful Hollywood actress (often refferred to as the American Garbo because of her reclsiveness). Mr Oller appears to have spent years researchig Arthur's life (facts that Arthur kept hidden up to her death) taking on a massive challenge and all his research has payed off. He uncovers her family history, her true date and place of birth, her warm but distanced relationship with her mother, her early apprentiship in silents and talkies, her eventual rise to stardom and her life away from acting. Oller takes a sensitive look at Arthur's strange and often sad life (I found his diagnosis of Arthur's problems especially welcome as I have problems similar to Miss Arthur's.) I found it fascinating to read of Arthur's backstage tantrums and how she ended up pulling out of almost every stage production she was involved in due to apparent illness mixed with feelings of inferiority. I found the chapter describing Arthur's final years especially poignant - she was bedridden for the last two years of her life after suffering a major stroke and was cared for by her dear friend Ellen Mastroianni (who was many of the people Oller interviewed for the book). I continue to admire Miss Arthur after having read this book (infact it is what started me off on reading film biographies) and reccomend it to anyone interested in Hollywood's golden age or simply in reading a fascinating life story.

5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful Insight Into A Hollywood Legend, 17 Nov 2006
By Amos "A.M.S." (Liverpool) - See all my reviews
Jean Arthur was a great actress and this Biography deals with her life in a respectful and affectionate way. It touches lightly on her ancestry and her early years. It deals with her Film & Stage career in a through manner and touches lightly on the few rumours surrounding her private life.
The author has an affection for his subject which is evident and he deals with this troubled Star in a compassionate manner. I enjoyed the book immensely and would recommend it to anyone who wants a glimpse into Hollywood's past and the life of one of the Stars of the past.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent. Well researched and entertaining reading., 8 Nov 1998

I don't normally read biographies but this one was great. John Oller has written a highly entertaining account of an incredible actress's life. It was a fun read.
