Product Description

Product Description

This textbook has been updated to incorporate the many advances in genomics, protein engineering, computational biology and bioinformatics. In the 2nd edition, the authors continue to explain evolutionary change at the molecular level in a way that can be understood without much prerequisite knowledge of molecular biology, evolution or mathematics.

2.0 out of 5 stars Could have been a lot better, 24 May 2001
By A Customer
I'm afraid I'm going to have to start this review with a rant about the price. This is not exactly the greatest bargain the world has ever see... As for content, the phrase "curate's egg" springs to mind. Some parts of this book (the coverage of gene duplication and exon shuffling, for example) are excellent. However, all too often information is allowed to drown in a sea of equations. The book also displays a lack of proofreading. Often, diagrams are labelled "1, 2 and 3" only to be referred to in the text as "a, b and c". This is a minor complaint, but it gets infuriating after you've paid [...] for the book. A glossary would also have been useful. In conclusion, then, this book has a lot of useful information marred by sloppy execution and a high price tag. Get it out of the library instead.

3.0 out of 5 stars overpriced and narrow, 21 April 2004
By W. James "brasenose" - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
Some hard-core analytical phylogenetics is explained briefly but accessibly. Unlike others, this book discusses genome structures and their evolution.
