5.0 out of 5 stars The Master's thoughts from the Master's voice, 25 Oct 2002
By Mariel Sacco (Sliema Malta) - See all my reviews
This book will help anyone who would like to know more from the Master's voice himself. Lindfors gathers a vast number of interviews which span from the early years when Achebe was still a novice (so as to say) to the art of novel writing to 1995, a decade or so after the publication of 'Anthills of the Savannah', Achebe's last novel to date. The reader gets an insight on Achebe's own thoughts and ideas expressed in a more sort of everyday language and zooms in on the aspects which are of major concern to the author of great novels like 'Things Fall Apart', 'No Longer at Ease' and 'A Man of the People'. This collection of interviews and talks is a must for any person, student or not, who would like to get to know Achebe better - what he thinks about his own novels, why he has written or said certain things and what his major concerns are in post-Independence Nigeria.
Interviews which carry certain weight are Onuora Ossie Enekwe's which focuses on the language issue; Kalu Ogba's which treats Igbo culture as well as language and religion and Charles H Rowell's which discusses the concept of the artist in the African Society. The editor also provides a timeline of Achebe's life at the beginning of the book.
