Product Description

Product Description

Whether it is stopping to smell the roses or trekking in the Himalaya, people will commonly turn to nature-based activites for relaxation, often resulting in personal happiness and well being. In this pragmatic guide to nature guided therapy, Dr. Burns points out that the wellness of anyone is based on both the health of the environment and the relationship between that person and his/her environment. This book begins with an evolutionary history of the relationship between humans and their environment. This cross-cultural journey into traditional healing disciplines, such as ethno-medicines, sociobiology and anthropology, explores their concepts of the person-nature relationship. An examination of how clinical data, empirical scientific investigations and anecdotal accounts point to the healing benefits of a balanced relationship with the environment. The author then explores the human senses to examine its mechanical basis, its affect-creating potentials and the ways in which it can be utilized therapeutically. Following this, case histories and step-by-step procedures for utilizing nature-guided strategies are presented. Clinical applications of ecotherapy and research in environmental psychology and psychobiology are also included. In "Nature Guided Therapy", the author does not suggest that this approach is necessarily the sole way to work therapeutically; it is adaptable to other theoretical methods that a clinician would utilize in a session. Either way, this approach should help clients to reach their desired goals in the quickest and most effective manner.

From the Back Cover

In this new paperback version of this popular title, Dr. Rosenbaum, a practicing psychotherapist, explores the challenges and joys of making our lives into coherent wholes. In the midst of our daily busy activity, we often feel fragmented. We experience conflicting demands from our work, personal relationships, families, and spiritual practices.

Psychotherapy addresses this sense of fragmentation in an effort to help us be uniquely ourselves. Zen Buddhist practice insists we find ourselves in every moment of our lives and speaks to the basic connectedness of all things. Zen and the Heart of Psychotherapy attempts to integrate these two basic tenets. Each chapter examines some aspect of sewing together the practice of Zen with the practice of psychotherapy, and the subsequent implications for daily life. Though there is a logical progression to the chapters, each can be read on its own if the reader is interested in how a particular text might inform their psychotherapy or life circumstance.

Through the stories of his clients' as well as through his own difficulties and discoveries, the author invites each reader to actualize the fundamental point: to realize the joy and compassion that comes when we touch the basic ground of life, and to put this joy into play in our everyday activity.
