5.0 out of 5 stars The source for site remediation and estimating methods, 26 Aug 1999
By A Customer
This book provides clear and readable explanations of the most widely used treatment technologies for environmental remediation. It also examines the many factors to be considered in estimating the costs of that work. The major legislation that makes remediation so important is summarized. Readers interested in learning, or reviewing, the options available for site remediation will find it quite useful.

The book describes the most successful technologies, their associated work practices, and how to assemble supportable cost estimates. Where two or more technologies are being considered in the preliminary design phase of a project, their characteristics, cost factors, and the detailed information needed to prepare final cost estimates may be compared. These up-front comparisons that guide final technology selection and cost estimation are a well known key to successful project management and completion. The nearly universal types of site work required for these projects (access roads, utilities, fencing, storm water management) and the OSHA-defined safety level of the project are explained as cost factors that cannot be overlooked.

This book does not give costs. However, finely-detailed cost information, for all of the technologies this book explains, is provided in two companion books: "Environmental Remediation Cost Data - Unit Price" and "Environmental Remediation Cost Data - Assemblies". Cost data in those books is updated yearly.

The NST/Engineers, Inc. reviewers, from the viewpoint of remediation consulting engineers, found this book to be extremely helpful. It is a great time-saver in comparing, and then selecting, design and cost estimating approaches to site remediation. The reader has the assurance that when specific, current, cost data is required, it can be obtained from the two companion books cited above.

Who should have this reference? · Site owners · consultants · students · environmental regulators · construction managers · cost estimators, and · insurance and real estate financing providers. They will each benefit from a better understanding of the designs and cost factors involved in site remediation.

The requirements of CERCLA ("Superfund") and RCRA(solid and hazardous waste management), and their amendments such as SARA and other supporting legislation, are explained. This is the major regulatory legislation affecting sites containing hazardous materials. The technologies that will answer the requirements of that legislation are shown to consist of "treatment trains". They involve just a few primary strategies.

Those strategies are shown to draw their technology from thirteen functional groupings which include: · ex-situ or in-situ treatments (contaminated material removed, or not removed, for treatment from its place of occurrence) · soil, air, and groundwater treatments · disposal, transfer, and destruction technologies; and several others. Fifty sections describe individual technologies, necessary professional effort and construction labor, sampling and analysis required, and contractors' field-related tasks that estimators sometimes overlook.
