4.0 out of 5 stars Fascinating, in-depth and interesting...yet needs a bit more, 22 Jan 2001

This is one of the more informative, higher quality (even though they do mention choke chains), better written books currently on the market that deal with general dog ownership (i.e. not just one specific aspect). Most definately worth the current Amazon price. Contained withint the glossy covers are in-depth sections on feeding and helth care - some fascinating articles on canine physiology. There is a large section related to the dietery requrements of the pet dog, and a detailed section relating to the nutritional values of various feedstuffs, of assistance of you decide to home-feed your dog. Helpful sections also include indexes of common canine conditions - which should explain fully what your vet is ranting about during a consultation! Doglopedia, however, glosses over the training and behaviour aspect of dog ownership - one close to my heart, and one which is an EXTREMELY important factor of dog ownership. Other books on the markt that deal with training and behaviour topics better as those such as "Think Dog!" and "Why Does My Dog...?" by John FISHER and David Weston's "Dog Training, The Gentle Modern method". The natural feeding aspects are also better dealt with in books such as "Give Your Dog a Bone" and "Grow Your Pups With Bones" by Ian BILLINGHURST. In summary: a book I would reccomend for the first-time owner to review from cover to cover, both before and after they decide to get a dog...however, not the only book they should buy! Managing to get through its many informative pages would show your commitment first-off! Stimulating and interesting, just needing a little more!
