Product Description
Synopsis
Within Africa and around the world, the Ridgeback has proven its versatility, devotion and intelligence. This text examines the breed's unique appearance and its ability to hunt, as well as its adaptability as a family companion.

From the Inside Flap
Courageous and majestic, the Rhodesian Ridgeback, with his distinctive line of hair along his spine, is among the noblest of breeds. Thought to originate from Ethiopia or Southern Sudan, the early forerunner of the Ridgeback was domesticated by the nomadic Hottentot tribe, whom he accompanied south, travelling through Tanzania and Zambia, and eventually arriving in Rhodesia, now Zimbabwe, and southern Africa. Dutch colonisers introduced European sporting breeds to the Hottentot dogs, to produce a dog similar to the one we know today. An extensive period of selective breeding followed to create a dog with the innate ability, speed, and courage to bay lions. In this award-winning comprehensive book of the breed, the authors trace the Rhodesian Ridgeback's origins from his early nomadic roots, through to his work as a hunter of big game, and finally to the popular show and companion dog that he is today. Advice is given on choosing and raising a puppy, and caring for an adult dog, and a chapter devoted to nutrition, written by vet and clinical nutritionist Michael Davies, provides valuable information on the Ridgeback's dietary needs. The Rhodesian Ridgeback is a large breed, that can be boisterous and strong-willed, so sound training is essential. Detailed information is given on training a puppy to ensure you end up with a well-mannered, trustworthy adult. Advanced training is also covered, including information on the Obedience and Agility dog. There is an analysis of the Breed Standards, with advice on showing your Rhodesian Ridgeback, and a comprehensive guide to influential dogs in the breed's development. For the experienced owner, detailed advice is given on breeding and rearing a litter, and canine geneticist Dr Malcolm Willis gives a fascinating insight into the genetic principles that should be considered when planning a breeding programme. A comprehensive section on health care describes any breed-specific conditions you may encounter, together with advice on preventative care. Illustrated with more than 120 photos and helpful line-drawings, The Complete Rhodesian Ridgeback is essential reading for all enthusiasts of the breed. --This text refers to the Hardcover edition.
