Product Description

Product Description

Many people keep their pet cats strictly indoors. Indoor cats are healthier, safer and live longer, but they can fall prey to boredom, stress, obesity and destructive behaviour. This book shows owners how to avoid these pitfalls and create an indoor world that is stimulating, healthy and loving.

5.0 out of 5 stars Very relevant for those with FIV cats who stay indoors, 19 April 2001
By A Customer
My two cats are confined indoors not through a desire on my part to keep them safe but because they are both FIV positive. To let my cats go outside would bring a risk of infection to both themselves (from other viruses) and to other cats.

I therefore found this book invaluable in giving my cats things to do whilst they are confined inside the house while I am out at work all day long.

In response to the other reviewer of this book I would like to add that as my cats have been FIV positive since birth, they have never had the luxury of going outside and as sucj so no inclination to do so. They are happy enough inside the house and I too have the luxury of owning two very special little animals who would otherwise have beeb put to sleep.

FIV cats are no less loveable than healthy cats and can in fact live a long and problem free life but they must not be allowed to run free outdoors. Surely this sacrifice worth it to see them both at play with each other or curled up on my bed with huge smailes on their faces.

This book has made those smiles bigger on their faces and i am sure that they are happier for the things we do with them now - i recommend this book to all those people who have FIV cats or other cats confined to the indoor way of life - go on and buy it - they deserve to be as happy as any other cat.

3.0 out of 5 stars Good details, half the story., 11 Dec 1999
By Mr. P. W. Bishop (Manchester, United Kingdom) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
First, let me declare that I am English. This is important. The great divide is between those Americans who keep their cats indoors-only and consider it madly irresponsible to do otherwise, and the rest of the world who risk letting their cats roam and think it is cruel not to do so. This book is written by an American lady of the first school. It contains good advice on keeping an indoor cat happy. It does not come to grips with the profound reservations that those outside of America will have with this policy. I understand that the author also collates New England ghost stories, so perhaps is not hard-headed enough to write the definitive book.

I would recommend anyone who really wants to get into this subject to read both this book and "The cat who cried for help" by Dr Nicholas Dodman. Dodman is a Scottish vet, working in the USA, treating behavioural problems in cats. He largely associates these problems with confinement indoors. He cites a mortality from euthanasia in the USA for behavioural problems that is of the same order of magnitude as the mortality on the roads in the U.K.

Why not buy both books before your cat comes to grief one way or the other. And don't get depressed; most humans and their feline owners live together very happily.
