Amazon.co.uk Review
"After conducting fourteen formal studies and more than a thousand interviews, directly observing dozens of executives in action, and compiling innumerable surveys, I am completely convinced that most organisations today lack the leadership they need," contends John P. Kotter, the Konosuke Matsushita Professor of Leadership at Harvard Business School. "And the shortfall is often large. I'm not talking about a deficit of 10%, but of 200%, 400%, or more in positions up and down the hierarchy," he writes in the opening essay to John P. Kotter on What Leaders Really Do, a collection of his most notable articles on the topic for the Harvard Business Review. Kotter isn't known to pull punches, and he doesn't here in pieces that fall into two categories: those concerned with "Leadership and Change" and those focusing on "Dependency and Networks." The articles in the book sensibly point out the difference between management and leadership, setting a direction instead of planning and budgeting, and motivating people as opposed to controlling them. They are all tied together effectively by the aforementioned new essay, in which Kotter presents his "Ten Observations About Management Behaviour" to summarise the concepts he has developed over a 30-year career. --Howard Rothman, Amazon.com

Product Description
Widely acknowledged as the world's foremost authority on leadership, John Kotter has devoted his remarkable career to studying organizations and those who run them, and his bestselling books and essays have guided and inspired leaders at all levels. Here, in this collection of his acclaimed Harvard Business Review articles, is an astute assessment of the real work of leaders, as only John Kotter can offer. To complement these articles, Kotter also contributes a new introduction, a thoughtful reflection on the themes that have developed throughout his work. Convinced that most organizations today lack the leadership they need, Kotter's mission is to help us better understand what leaders-real leaders-do. True leadership, he reminds us, is an elusive quality, and too often we confuse management duties and personal style with leadership, or even mistake unworthy leaders for the real thing. Yet without leadership, organizations move too slowly, stagnate, and lose their way. With John Kotter on What Leaders Really Do, readers will learn how to become more effective leaders as they explore pressing issues such as power, influence, dependence, and strategies for change. With the relentless change and escalating uncertainty that define our times, the need for strong leadership in business, government, and society has never been greater. Careers, customers, and communities all suffer in a poorly run enterprise. Sure to be eagerly embraced by Kotter's huge global following, John Kotter on What Leaders Really Do provides an invaluable opportunity to consider the core issues that lie at the heart of leadership and to rethink our own relationship to the work of leaders. A Harvard Business Review Book.

2.0 out of 5 stars Chapter 1 excellent new material - rest disappointing, 16 Aug 2001
By A Customer
John Kotter is without a doubt the leading authority on leadership and change. Previous books written by Kotter are perceptive and thought provoking, and he remains my personal choice as the best author on change management. As a consultant working as a personal coach with leaders and top executives I welcomed the more in depth approach to the issue of leadership promised in this book and was not disappointed by chapter 1 where Kotter gives 10 key observations on leadership at the turn of the century.

His observations are accurate, insightful and absolutely key for leadership as it emerges into the 21st century from the traditional approach now rendered defunct by re-engineering; downsizing, and delayering; to the emergence of a new leadership 'substance' which does not depend upon power but upon networking and influence.

How disappointing therefore that the remainder of this book consists of reprints of Kotters old papers, ranging from 1977 - 1995 which many people will already be familiar with. Admittedly it does track his thought processes to the views expressed in chapter 1, but the feeling it leaves you with is 'money for old rope' rather than the anticipated, more in-depth exploration of the observations listed in chapter 1.

Come on Professor Kotter, you can do better than this; hence only two stars.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent as usual, 4 Aug 1999
By A Customer
Prof. Kotter has done another superb job in vividly demonstrating the role of leaders. This book is authoritive and chock full of facts. I also suggest, as a supplement to this book, that you buy a skills-oriented book that I purchased at Amazon--------it will show new and experienced leaders "how" to be better leaders, easily and in a straightforward manner-----------This book is entitled "The Leader's Guide: 15 Essential Skills."
