Product Description

Product Description

Unpredictable, discontinuous change is an unavoidable consequence of doing business in the Information Age. Because this intense turbulence demands fast - even instantaneous - response, many large companies are fragmenting themselves into smaller, quick-response units. But in doing so, they relinquish important advantages of scale and scope. Is it possible to have it both ways? Can large, complex firms adapt successfully and systematically to unexpected change?

Yes, says Stephan Haeckel, but only if leaders learn how to manage their organizations as adaptive systems. In Adaptive Enterprise, Haeckel updates the concept of the corporation for the Information Age with a radical and comprehensive rethinking of organizational strategy, structure, and leadership. He outlines the new sense-and-respond business model that is helping companies systematically cope with the unexpected.

Haeckel argues that when unpredictability is a given, the only strategy that makes sense is a strategy to become adaptive - to sense early and respond quickly to abrupt changes in individual customer needs. As a result, a firm's operations must be driven by current customer requests - implicit as well as articulated - rather than by plans to make and sell what customers are forecasted to want in the future.

Here, for the first time, is a clear and comprehensive strategy for transforming firms into adaptive systems. Adaptive Enterprise is both a new way of thinking about business and a handbook for leadership of postindustrial organizations. It maps out, with examples and illustrations, a step-by-step plan that companies can use to transform themselves into a new type of organization - one in which change is not a problem to be solved, but rather an indispensable source of energy, growth, and value.

From the Author

Some additional opinions about this book.
Here are what some other early reviewers have said about Adaptive Enterprise: *****'Adaptive Enterprise is a must read for anyone whose firm is under technological attack. Its useful insights will be essential for both corporate executives and entrepreneurs who wish to understand the differences between the sense-and-respond business model of today's digital economy and the traditional make-and-sell approach.' --George H. Conrades, Chairman and CEO Akamai Technologies, Inc. and Partner, Polaris Venture Partners *****'Adaptive Enterprise is that rarest of business books that is rooted deeply in intellectual theory and at the same time offers critical advice for the practice of management. Understanding the principles articulated in Adaptive Enterprise will be the top priority of any business leader who wishes to survive—let alone prosper—in the emerging information economy.' --Rashi Glazer, Professor and co-Director, Center for Marketing and Technology, Haas School of Business, University of California at Berkeley *****'Steve Haeckel takes the 'sense and respond' and 'managing by wire' concepts to a new level of precision and practicality.' --Pierre Hessler, Executive Board Member, Cap Gemini Group *****'At last, a theoretical framework that helps companies understand their business and strategic choices in times when the old rules no longer apply. Adaptive Enterprise provides a practical handbook for business leaders who are serious about improving the future profitability of their companies. I wish I had had it years ago to use as part of my armory.' --Reg Munro, Executive General Manager, Old Mutual, South Africa *****'If you think you know what your future will be, this book is of little value. If, however, you are realistic about the future of your company, Adaptive Enterprise is of inestimable value!' --Vince Barabba, General Manager, Strategy and Knowledge Development, General Motors Corporation *****'Read Adaptive Enterprise to learn about the new fundamentals for designing and managing organizations. Stephan Haeckel's conceptual framework for a sense-and-respond organization is concrete, clear, and highly applicable to today's needs.' --Chris Argyris, James B. Conant Professor, Harvard University *****'Steve Haeckel has given new meaning to the idea of customer focus. Effective strategies will presume continuously changing customer priorities.' --Gordon Wyner, Vice President, Mercer Management Consulting *****'Adaptive Enterprise is an important and well-written contribution to the management literature. In an age where the only certainty is rapid, unpredictable change, Haeckel offers an intelligent, powerful presentation of the customer-driven, sense-and-respond organization necessary for an enterprise to survive.'--Frederick E. Webster, Jr., Charles Henry Jones Third Century Professor of Management, The Amos Tuck School of Business Administration *****'Adaptive Enterprise is an excellent resource for business leaders who need to improve their firm's capabilities to anticipate and respond to rapidly changing external conditions. By providing the framework, examples, and leadership requirements, Adaptive Enterprise will help executives develop their sense-and-respond organization.' --H. Paul Root, Director, Knight Ridder Center for Excellence in Management, Florida *****'Stephan Haeckel offers a fresh perspective on leadership, accountability, and commitment.' --Arvin F. Mueller, Vice President, General Motors *****'Adaptive Enterprise provides the clearest and simplest set of tools necessary for a long company life.' --Peter Schwartz, Chairman, Global Business Network

5.0 out of 5 stars A New Vision, 27 May 2007
By Stephen Parry "Author of Sense and Respond" (Lean Service Transformation Designer London) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
The book talks about creating Sense and Respond organisations and adopting operational strategies similar to the approaches taken by the German 'Mass-Customisation' school of thought, i.e. using technology to create an information factory then combining it with granular modular production techniques to deliver on-demand services. To my mind this solution falls well short of the Sense and Respond Vision the author expertly outlines. But don't let the wrong solution prevent you from adopting the right vision. This book and the vision it outlines is very important for the world of work today, where old buiness models have reached the end of their useful life.

While the technology theme is very strong in the book,(as you would expect from a stategy school based at IBM) its underlying message is the need to deconstruct the very fabric of the organisation and introduce structures that can close the duration between 'sensing' and 'responding' to a level that establishes a truly on-demand capability. Their analogy of obtaining the responsiveness of 'Fly-by-Wire' systems in aircraft works well in this respect

More space might have been given to the approaches required to change the management mindsets and behaviours.

I would caution companies not to think of this solely as a technology solution otherwise they may be in danger of simply creating a more sophisticated form of make and sell with the technology solution providing a disappointing response to sensing the wrong needs.

The book outlines a brilliant strategic case for the adoption of Sense and Respond principles.

Stephan has brought the term 'Sense and Respond' to the attention of a very large audience and has since this book developed it into a fully fledged post-industrial managerial model.

A great read for people who are passionate about creating breakthrough organisations.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Future of Service Industries, 22 Dec 1999
By A Customer
Adaptive Enterprise covers two separate but related topics - mass customisation (customisation at mass production costs) and agility (capability to deal with changes in the business environment and the associated high levels of uncertainty). The book is primarily focused on service industries, where services can often be customised through organisational (re)configuration (hence the agility dimension). Most importantly, the book covers the difficulties of moving from make and sell to sense and respond - difficulties often ignored in cookbook style business books. The book also addresses application of systems thinking to enterprise design - an important topic that is not covered enough in business books. Those interested in agility will also find Appendix B useful. Here one finds a decision process to use when one is faced with significant uncertainty. Overall the book is refreshing in its honesty. After reading this book you might also want to read some follow-ups: Mass Customisation (Joseph Pine); Agile Virtual Enterprise (Ted Goranson) and Agile Manufacturing (Paul T. Kidd).

5.0 out of 5 stars An Important New Way of Thinking About Organizations, 29 May 2004
By Professor Donald Mitchell "Jesus Makes Me a P... (Boston) - See all my reviews
(TOP 10 REVIEWER)
Many business books focus on the best practices of 1995 or earlier (such as Good to Great and Built to Last), which dooms the reader to being constantly behind the curve in developing and implementing best practices. This book is one of the rare exceptions that attempts to push the organization beyond today's best practices. I applaud the effort and found that the metaphors were powerful, and the thinking about how to implement the new concepts to be solid. I was pleased to see the references to newer ways of understanding customers (such as behavioral observation). Most companies are using outmoded ways of tracking and responding to customers, and this book has many good things to say in that direction. A potential weakness of the book is that it does not say much about how to anticipate customer responses so that you can start preparing well in advance for significant adjustments. Not everything can be done instantaneously as the customer changes. I liked that the book focused more on customers than on competitors (the overemphasis on outdoing competitors is a flaw of many academic business books, especially from Harvard Business School Publishing). The greatest strength of the book is a thoughtful discussion of the organizational consequences of creating more flexible and successfully adaptive enterprises. I was not convinced that anticipating change is as impossible as the book suggests, but this ability to sense and respond is very helpful when you miss (which will certainly occur in many cases). If you want to usefully stretch your mind about the rapid changes in your market, this book is a valuable resource for you. It will help you overcome your stalled thinking about how organizations should focus and operate. Enjoy!
