4.0 out of 5 stars Inspirational reading, 13 Sep 2004
By A. Popa "the_hairless_wonder" (Cedar, Michigan) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
This book really has some nice info about the use of compressors, reverbs, delays, tricks for monitoring mixes, and lots more. First it goes through subjects one by one and gives some general info plus a few related quotes from some famous mixing engineers. Although most of these people are professionals and talked about equipment that I will never use the theory was still valuable for me. It's stuff that can easily be adapted to my needs with my PC recording studio using Logic Audio.

This book doesn't receive 5 stars mainly because it is a little light for the money. The paragraphs of quotes are repeated in the third part of the book which consists of the interviews in their entirety. Also, the section on surround sound really was of no use to me (or most home recording studio enthusiasts I would think).

However, I did find the book a pleasure to read. I am a big reader and was surprised to see how interesting it was to get a little personal insight into some of the mixing techniques and the issues that are taken into consideration. The story about how they got the drum sound for "Billy Jean", for example, was very interesting.

So, I am glad I bought this book. I am still looking for more tips and tricks to improve my recording/mixing/production skills but I now have a much better idea of where to start when mixing, what kinds of things to consider, how to use effects more effectively and lots more.

4.0 out of 5 stars Reader friendly and interesting, 13 Jan 2004

If you're into home recording or are looking to brush up on your mixing skills in the studio, The Mixing Engineer's Handbook contains plenty of practical tips. I would say that this book is aimed at the beginner/intermediate reader and is easy to follow even with only a little knowledge of sound engineering. It never gets too heavy and is even funny at times! The book covers a good range of topics and interviews with mixing engineers which give a good insight into how the pro's create the hits. I've been mixing for years, and I still found this book useful.
