U.S. name for the book "Riptide" - so if
you have one, do not buy the other1

This was my first encounter with John Lawton's books. Set against the backdrop of the Second World War it recreates the period perfectly - you live, breathe and sense what it must have been like to live during the war years in London.

In contrast to the blandness of so many characters in contemporary fiction, John Lawton's are sharply drawn - with all their foibles - and believable. The novel is well paced and exciting - you're looking forward to the puzzle being solved, but more than that it's the characters you become interested in most, they're actually the biggest page-turner.

The author also gently pulls our leg (a minor character's name is the same as that of a well-known actor for example) and there are literary references that later on play a part in the novel. Dickens fans will spot them straight away.

I found it a very enjoyable read and look forward to meeting the book's hero, Frederick Troy, more fully in the other novels. I agree with another reviewer that they would make perfect material for a film or a series.
