5.0 out of 5 stars Comment on East Along the Equator, 6 Jan 1999
By A Customer
This is a fine book. It takes the reader into the heart of Africa and into the heart of American foreign policy. The New Yorker described it as "wonderfully well written," and it is.

5.0 out of 5 stars Travelogue and politica - a fine bok about a weird country, 4 Jan 2000
By A Customer
Man - did I get annoyed with Helen Winternitz! Whining, self-obsessed, posturing - name a load of non-americans' prejudices against contemporary american travellers, and she's got 'em! But as I write this review 8-9 years after I read the book, I'll admit: It is excellent. After all these years, I still have vivid memories of her beautiful descriptions of steaming up the Congo river aboard a sweating, dirty, noisy and lively barge from Kinshasa to Kisangani. I still see Helen Winternitz out there in front of the barge with her thesaurus's variety of descriptions of the colour 'green', trying to pick just the right one for exactly this particular day's foilage along the mighty river's banks, I still remember her wonderful description of the night that she threw overboard all her reservations and delved down into the steamy interior of the boat, got drunk and danced the night away to the inciting, repetitious riffs of the zairean rhumba, and I still remember the horror of her arrest and persecution by Mobutu's police. She has forever instilled in me the urge to do the same trip - I actually tried in 1996, only to be stopped by the boatsmen in Kinshasa, who didn't dare sending up more boats towards the war-ravaged interior. Winternitz delivered exactly what is required by a good travel book - sharply focused images that lasts, combined with telling anecdotes and social teaching. Her warmth towards the people she meet and her - I can see this now - willingness to mock herself adds a destinctive human touch to her book. In short: This is a classic - of travel literature, and of political insight into this tragic, never resting and always fascinating country.
