3.0 out of 5 stars Good, but have you read the excellent ones?, 6 Mar 2004
A good worthy read, that's entertaining. It's more story than "game". I'd say it's a must buy only if you already read Whoreson by Goines, his best book. For top calibre pimping books, start at the top of the tree. Pimp by Iceberg Slim
(top story and top game), Space Age Pimping by Paradise (deep deep game), before checking out Whoreson.

3.0 out of 5 stars Slim's Shadow, 28 Dec 2003
By Gusterson (London) - See all my reviews
Goines' first effort is nothing more than a fictionalisation of Iceberg Slim's semi-autobiographical "Pimp".

Slim (aka Robert Beck) is the real deal: his novel pimps you much harder than "Whoreson", and is a classic. "Whoreson" only scratches the surface of the darkness that Slim drowns you in.

If you read both "Pimp" and "Whoreson" you will not have wasted any time, but you will see that Goines owes more than a nod to a superior book.

5.0 out of 5 stars Understatement, 10 Jan 2005
To say this mans work is great would be an understatement. These brilliant pieces of literature are set in the most realistic scenary. If he said someone starts shooting than duck because the stories surpass the pages. This should converted into a movie along with Crime Partner and Never Die Alone. So whoever takes alook, don't just read, live it.
