3.0 out of 5 stars The DISSERTATION on Natural Dyeing.... whew!, 3 Aug 1999
By A Customer
Although packed with a vast amount of information on natural dye history and formulas, this book reads like a dissertation. It's lengthy and exacting on all accounts. If preparing and using natural dyes sounds like something "fun" to do, this book may just leach all the excitement right out of you.

5.0 out of 5 stars A ruthlessly precise passion for color, 5 Nov 2007
By frockstar (London, UK) - See all my reviews
If you want to leaf languidly through glossy, expensively shot photos of pretty skeins of wool, buy a different book. If you want to learn how to set up an indigo dye vat, mordant any natural fiber successfully or attain the perfect Turkey red, buy this one. J.N. Liles brings a lab scientist's background and extensive historical research to a craft in which imprecise directions can lead to disappointment or disaster. I am a beginning dyer with a short attention span for trial and error and find this book's scrupulous and exhaustive recipes (nearly all of which the author tested himself) extremely useful. Troubleshooting tips are provided in many places.

Although information-heavy, this book is not without its own geeky poetry ("Good natural indigo is elegant and feeds one's atavistic tendencies"). The author is obviously deeply enamored of dyes and dyeing, and his enthusiasm is contagious. My only caveat is that as the author is American, the book gives measurements in Fahrenheit, ounces, teaspoons etc. and focuses mostly on plants indigenous to North America. That said, it's an invaluable reference. Oh... and it has photos of pretty skeins of wool, too.
