5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent INTRODUCTION to basic celestial navigation, 20 Jan 2004
By Navigateur (California) - See all my reviews
I have read and reviewed a number of celestial navigation texts. For those new to the subject, this is the best introductory text around. You do not need to know any spherical trigonometry nor do you need any calculators or computers. You only need a precise watch (inexpensive digital is the best), a sextant, knowledge of simple arithmetic and a little geometry, a current nautical almanac of the heavenly bodies, and the volumes of the 'sight reduction' tables titled H.O. 249 (Air Almanac as they are called, 3 volumes in all). John Milligan explains the steps very well, including the use of the sun, moon, planets and stars, for finding your position. For those who want to go a little further in their study of celestial navigation, I highly recommend Merle B. Turner's 'Celestial for the Cruising Navigator' as the next step. Afterwards, even more in-depth are works like Charles Cotter's 'History of Nautical Astronomy' and 'The Elements of Navigation and Nautical Astronomy'.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent overview of the oldest means of navigation, 26 Jun 1997
By A Customer
Sailors, from the most serious of circumnavigators and racers, to the armchair-navigator will enjoy this classic on celestial navigation. "Steering by the stars" - an art perfected by ancient Polynesians who were navigating the Pacific to Hawai`i - as if it were a pond - over 1000 years before western Europeans left sight of their coasts.... also look for a new title by John "Stu" Milligan, The Rainbow Quest - his first-person account of the 1969 TransPacific Yacht Race, from Long Beach Calif to Honolulu Hawai`i - you can read excerpts from this well-written adventure on the high seas on the web at: http://holoholo.org/wycnews/transpac/ and aslo check out the action in this years Transpac'97 race.... Direct From Diamond Head Via WebXpress... be there... aloha... danno
