The greatest thriller in history., 25 Aug 2004
Tom Clancy is undoubtedly the master of the techno-thriller, each of his books is a classic and must be read by anyone who enjoys anything such as James Bond or Mission Impossible. The story is incredibly engrossing, keeping us glued to the pages until the exciting climax has finally passed us by. Its incredible how Clancy managed to keep the book exciting throughout every page, most of the book is taken up by explanation, description or conversation; all of which the reader follows keenly. The occasional piece of action grips us unrelentingly and has us squirming towards the edge of the bed. Any technological terms (of which, understandably, there is a hefty amount) is briefly explained in some-what laymens terms, and all characters are given a sharp introduction; and sometimes a back-story. Also, "The Hunt for Red October" sees the introduction of Jack Ryan; a recurring character in Clancy novels, appearing in many of them. A large portion of the story is focused on Ryan, much being told from a third-person limited perspective. This is, in my opinion, Clancy's best novel, although his others are definetly worth the money (notably Red Storm Rising and Patriot Games). I love this book, and its got a great title too.
