4.0 out of 5 stars The greatest thriller in history., 25 Aug 2004
By M. Magowan "spudmeister" (Kent, England) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
Tom Clancy is undoubtedly the master of the techno-thriller, each of his books is a classic and must be read by anyone who enjoys anything such as James Bond or Mission Impossible.

The story is incredibly engrossing, keeping us glued to the pages until the exciting climax has finally passed us by. Its incredible how Clancy managed to keep the book exciting throughout every page, most of the book is taken up by explanation, description or conversation; all of which the reader follows keenly. The occasional piece of action grips us unrelentingly and has us squirming towards the edge of the bed.

Any technological terms (of which, understandably, there is a hefty amount) is briefly explained in some-what laymens terms, and all characters are given a sharp introduction; and sometimes a back-story.

Also, "The Hunt for Red October" sees the introduction of Jack Ryan; a recurring character in Clancy novels, appearing in many of them. A large portion of the story is focused on Ryan, much being told from a third-person limited perspective.

This is, in my opinion, Clancy's best novel, although his others are definetly worth the money (notably Red Storm Rising and Patriot Games). I love this book, and its got a great title too.

5.0 out of 5 stars Clancy at his best!, 22 Aug 2003
By K. Wyatt "ssintrepid" (St. Louis, MO United States) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
It is the height of the cold war. A soviet missile sub commander has, along with several other officers, decided to defect with the Soviet Union's latest nuclear submarine. Captain Marko Ramius has been planning this since the unfortunate death of his beloved wife. She was, in effect, left to die due to the mistakes made by a drunken doctor and a poor medical system. He is so confident that he and his officers will succeed that he even sends a letter to the overall commander of the soviet navy telling them pretty much what he's going to do.

So begins the best military/political action thriller novel this reader has ever read. Tom Clancy wove together so many events, plots and sub plots into this novel that it was destined to be a best seller. If you've not read "The Hunt for Red October," I highly suggest you get a copy as soon as you can get your hands on one. Thank you very much to Tom Clancy for this masterpiece. {ssintrepid}

5.0 out of 5 stars The best Tom Clancy, 22 April 2001
By A Customer
I have read and enjoyed all of Tom Clancys novels but none more than this one. The plot is excellent and the tension thats builds up towards the end means that you will not put it down untill you have read it twice. To make it even better there is the thought that some of this might actually have happened as the film suggests. If you have seen the film, then read the book as it contails vital details that the film was lacking. This is Tom Clancys finest novel, with the possible exception of Red Storm Rising, and gives a brilliant insight into the secret world of nuclear submarines. BUY NOW! You will not be disapointed.
