Product Description

Product Description

Adapted for the screen by the author from her enormously successful novel about Josie Alibrandi and her relationship with her friends and family in her last year at school. Includes stills from the film and an introduction from the author.

From the Author

It's about relationships between women from 3 generations.
This book is not just about sex and drugs. It's about how hard it is to fit in when your different. this book expresses a girl's life and the phases she goes through. I wrote this book because of my Nonna emmigrating to Australia. I wanted to know how it felt to live without a close member of the family near you. I never knew I was going to sit down and write about racism or suicide. If you liked this book, watch out, because a movie's coming your way.

Lots of love, Melina --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

5.0 out of 5 stars Enchanting, even if you're not a teenager, 29 Jul 2002
By A Customer
This review is from: Looking for Alibrandi (Hardcover)
In my frequent trips around the world I have always been fascinated when encountering second- or third-generation Italians, because their grandparents' choice might have my ancestors', and each one of them might be me.
Although I saw the movie first, I fell totally in love with this book. It's about a girl searching for her identity, and we've all been there. It's about being "different" from those around you, and I've been there as long as I can remember.
The story is less streamlined than the movie's, but this makes it more real since we are in the world of teenagers, and the book's Jose is much more rebel than the movie's, which is great.
Every teenager is full of anger, and Josephine has a lot to be angry for. She manages to discover herself, and she does it not by being excessive, or by being excessively saintly: she makes it only when she stops refusing her background and understands its value, although she maintains a grain of salt throughout the whole process.
It'd be obvious to recommend this book for all girls; it should be published in all the countries Italians moved (and still move) to: think Germany, France or Belgium; think the US, think Brasil, Venezuela or Argentina, so I wish to recommend it also to all adults, male and female, as well as to grandparents, who might find a way to connect with their grandkids.

5.0 out of 5 stars What I Thought........, 7 Aug 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Looking for Alibrandi (Hardcover)
This is such a great book!!! actually it's one of the best books I've ever read. It's my fave along with "Soup for the Teenage Soul". I think this would be a great book for any teen. Josie is an Italian living in Australia and she is caught between two cultures. Also she goes to a very rich school with lot's of weathly people who she mixes with but she is not one of them. She is there on a Scholarship. Throught out this book she deals with her long lost father. And other members of her family. She also deals with the usual teen troubles and is caught between 2 guys who come from 2 different worlds. I seriously could not put this book down. It's a *MUST READ* and I can't wait for another book by Melina Marchetta!

5.0 out of 5 stars What a fab book, 12 Jun 2001
This review is from: Looking for Alibrandi (Hardcover)
What a great book. I saw the film while on my GAP year in Australia but the book was sooooooo much better. For any female who has ever felt she is in a minority. This the book for you. Melina Marchetta deals with issues such as peer presure, relationships between friends and the opposite sex and the coming to terms with what your roots and heritage are. We all know people like the characters in this book and the dialog between the characters is so natural you can't help but be totally absorbed and wraped up in this funny , poinient, inspirational book. I can't recommend this book highly enough.
