5.0 out of 5 stars History and not Myth, 15 Oct 2008
I read this book several times over the years as it is widely available through Shi'a networks that have re printed it in cheap Iranian editions for propagation purposes.
Writen as it is by a Shi'a believer and keeping in mind what I mentioned above it might surprise those who know me as a polemicist that has often engaged in refutting the Shi'a creed that I actually rank this book so highly.
The reason is simple, this is a book of history and not religious propaganda, a book of history and not myth. Surely many of my fellow Sunni Muslims would dislike and disagree with much of it out of their general ignorance of Islamic history, but the book does a lot more towards neagating Shi'a assertions of infallibility to their Imams. On the contrary, by contextualising the historical experience of the Imams of Ahl Bayt themselves, their political climate, and the expectations and aspirations of the proto-Shi'a, that is the elements within Muslim society that largely aligned themselves politically and religiously with the hope of a redeemed Islam led by the Ahl Bayt, we come to a rational picture and arrive at a clearer image of Shi'ism not as the Islam original of the Prophet but the result of historical and cultural processes compounded by political failure.
The book will be a challenge to all those not ready to think beyond "the box" whatever that box may be, Sunni, Shi'a or other.
