Not acceptable quality, 4 Jan 2004
Terrible, I'm afraid. Years ago, books of this quality were acceptable, and the norm for martial arts. Fortunately, things have moved on, and in the world of BJJ, some of the best produced books around are available. This is definetely not one of them. Black and white photos have been the bane of judo books for years now, and although most photos have the fighters wearing different colour jackets, inexplicably, in one chapter, they are both wearing white - making identification very difficult. The descriptions are not good. The comments run: "shift your weight....complete the lock" and that's it. The techniques described are armlocks, leglocks and chokes. Hardly the essence of BJJ - there are no sweeps, controls, escapes or throws. Most of the text of the first chapter is in an interview Rigan gave to Grappling magazine, and the rest of the book reads like the technique section of said magazine. There are two books that are light years ahead of this - Brazilian Jiu-jitsu by Royler and Renzo, and Black Belt Techniques by Rigan's brother, Jean-Jacques. Jean-Jaques's book is everything that this book isn't. Buy "Black Belt Techniques" and not this.
