Product Description

Review

"It is very well written, beautifully laid out and extremely practical."
Dr Tony Hope, Director of Ethox, Institute of Health Sciences, Oxford

Product Description

Although this book is aimed primarily at the final–year medical student about to begin his/her first house job, it will also prove invaluable to house officers already on the job. The book will provide finalists with real openings for action in their work so they can perform with confidence and ease. It aims to bridge the gap between the theoretical knowledge gained at medical school and the practical know–how of being a doctor on a daily basis. Reading this book should ameliorate the feeling of panic that invariably paralyse finalists as they begin their first house jobs.

4.0 out of 5 stars it will help to ease you into things, 19 April 2005
This books attempts to adopt a practical approach, essentially trying to fill in the blanks that medical school left behind- ie rather a lot.

The transition to becoming a real doctor is obviously rather scary at times. No one ever told you what to actually do about someone who is oliguric. Well, with this book, help is at hand. The chapters essentially try to cover everything from getting started to your personal finances.
The latter aspects are a little out of date and would only really apply to the most innocent amongst us.

The common problems chapter, combined with your oxford handbook will cover most on-calls.

Of course after a couple of months you won't need this book at all...then you can donate it to your 5th years...
