Product Description

Review

"Highly recommended by Professor Chard to students at Barts and The Royal London, I think that this book is probably the best obstetrics and gynaecology textbook in the shops at the moment.

This book is ideal for medical students as it gives you all the information needed to get through the obs and gynae course, but I′m sure postgrads will find it useful as well. Especially good for exam revision is the management section at the back which summarises most of the major obstetric and gynaecological problems in the clinical environment."

Barts and The London Chronicle

"Recommended by faculty...well written and suitable for all years of study. The diagrams are simple and informative."

Sphincter, Liverpool Medical Students′ Society

"It is highly recommended for building up a basic core knowledge of Obstetrics and Gynaecology and for maintaining it up to the exam."

Cambridge Medicine, Addenbrooke′s Clinical School Gazette

"Impey′s book is my favourite...One of the most useful sections of Impey′s book is the management section at the back. This is ideal revision for objective structured clinical exams – it deals with all the common presenting complaints, suggests possible causes, important aspects of the history, examination, and investigations, and then offers some management options...a great book which could certainly by labelled as the only book needed to pass finals in obs and gynae."

Student BMJ

"This book gives you all that you need to get through your obstetrics and gynaecology course – and the exams. Thorough, it never neglects the basics. Detailed, it is well set out and easy to read. Want to pass well? Buy this book."

Steven Kane–Todhall, Oxford Medical School

Sphincter, Liverpool Medical Students' Society

Recommended by faculty...well written and suitable for all years of study. The diagrams are simple and informative.

5.0 out of 5 stars How to learn O&G in 10 days... I did., 12 Jan 2006
Surely not I hear you all cry! Yes and I assure you, you can do the same with this handy text.

This has to go down as one of the best texts I bought whilst at medschool, ranking up there with the Oxford handbook and Surgical talk (not Lissauer though - miserable book). The 2 sections are clearly defined and well laid-out, the information is concise (thank god) and the 'at a glance' boxes summarise the content in precisely that way. Also, it is handy enough for one of the more dedicated members of your firm to carry around with them without you needing to.

Undoubtedly others will prefer a more comprehensive text that will 'guarantee' a prize/A/first etc. If however, you are like me i.e. have a fairly limited interest in the subjects(!) then Impey will more than adequately cope with your needs and assist the clinical work which is of vital importance in these specialities.

In summary, a great textbook that treats both aspects of Obs n Gynae with equal merit whist putting emphasis on the 'need to know to pass' rather than the 'need to know to get an A'...

Just don't leave it to the last minute... it wasn't pretty.

5.0 out of 5 stars Well worth it for the undergraduate exams., 17 Nov 2001
By A Customer
"If you're doing Obs and Gynae then buy Impey!" It's as simple as that. I could just end the review there but that would be rather dry wouldn't it? So I shall continue.

This book by Impey is a very concise, readable book designed to give you the essentials of the subject during a firm that is long and quite draining. It gives you all the material to pass the exam at the end of the firm, which happens to be a finals exam! Given that time is limited this is a good book to use to help you pass and pass well!

It is divided into two sections: Gynaecology and Obstetrics. With 15 and 20 chapters respectively the book goes into enough depth without getting bogged down in the detail. There are references to very recent research papers for those who want more detail on certain topics. Clearly written chapters are accompanied by boxes of key points and 'At a glance' summaries at the end of each chapter make for quick revision. This is a must for all of those doing O&G finals and the author is to be congratulated on producing such a readable text.

The final section has brief details on management of specific cases in both specialties, for example pre-eclampsia and ovarian carcinoma. This section is ideal for quick revision before the exam. I found it especially useful at 2am on the day of my exam! In conclusion, this is probably the only textbook you will ever need for Obstetrics and Gynaecology. Trust me, I did.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent for obs/gynae undergrad rotation, 1 Jun 2004
By Jonathan (Chester, UK) - See all my reviews
I didn't discover Impey until I'd finished my rotation in Obs/Gynae, but I wish I'd known about it from the start! It gives an excellently-written overview of obstetrics and gynaecology, providing enough detail so you understand it well, but not too much 'irrelevant' detail that confuses.

The end of each chapter has brilliant "At A Glance" boxes for all the topics covered in that chapter. Overall, it's definitely the best Obs/Gynae textbook I've found (others tried: Lecture Notes, Fundamentals (Llewelyn), Essentials, Undergrad Obs/Gynae).
