4.0 out of 5 stars Lonely Planet: Southwest France, 18 April 2002
Just got back from a trip to Southwest France, and the Lonely Planet guidebooks have been my trusted travelling companion around the globe 90% of the time.

I was attracted to some of the photos of the medieval towns in this guidebook and decided to spend a week in France to check it out.

The recommended accomodation in the book were indeed a delight. However, I felt the authors didn't spend enough time exploring the less 'touristy' areas for food.

Most of the recommended places to eat looked like they were primed mainly for tourists, unlike some of the other LonelyPlanet guides, which takes you to places where the locals favour.

I also found the information in the Bearn region lacking and doesn't do enough justice to the place. For the outdoor enthusiasts, don't miss this region! It's simply stunning.

Use this book for your pre-trip and normal planning needs. But do spend some time exploring around on your own and asking the locals. You'll be surprised to find notable things not covered in the book.

Those points aside, the book nevertheless maintains a high standard, consistent with the Lonely Planet brand name.
