4.0 out of 5 stars Pok Kai!, 1 Oct 2003

I learn Cantonese for a bit of fun and so I found a small phrasebook like this is very useful.

At the beginning and end it has quick reference to numbers, basic words and phrases such as saying hello and asking for a room. There is also a short English - Cantonese and Cantonese - English Dictionary in the back.

Being a phrasebook it concentrates on the spoken word rather than the written and starts off by explaining how to pronounce letters and words in the book. This is where the trouble begins, Cantonese is a very complex language and each book you reads spells the same word differently since there isn't really a universal way to spell Cantonese words. Learning to pronounce them can be an uphill struggle, fortunately I learnt basic Cantonese through a combination of this book and a Cantonese speaking friend I had so whenever I began to mispronounce words I could be corrected.

Apart from the problems with the pronunciation (which im sure most Cantonese books suffer from) the phrasebook gives a reasonably good walkthrough of Cantonese, and I would definitely recommend it to someone looking to learn the basics.

I'm not sure how useful explaining your countries governmental set up and policies (one of the sections in the phrasebook) is to the average tourist but most of the other sections are fairly useful.

The Best Cantonese Phrasebook I've found. If you want to gain a basic understanding of the Cantonese Language then this is definately for you. I got this book before I took my fantastic trip to Hong Kong and this book proved to be very useful and easy to use and understand. Thank You Kam Y Lau for all the hard work you put into making this exellent phrasebook. BUY THIS BOOK

2.0 out of 5 stars Hhhhmmmmm, 1 Mar 2001

Having learnt Cantonese 'properly' I do not recommend this book - guidance of pronunciation is poor, and people who speak from this book generally speak poorly.

However, this may be because Cantonese CANNOT be succinctly romanised, it can only be learnt by proper instruction.

Do not be put off by this, Cantonese is a great language to learn, but it's complexity and pronounciation are too hard to be taught in a 'quick fix' book - in HK most people speak English.
