2.0 out of 5 stars Disappointing and not worth travelling with, 11 May 2004
By Darren Simons (Middlesex, United Kingdom) - See all my reviews
(TOP 500 REVIEWER)
I recently bought this book along with the Lonely Planet Japan guide for a trip to Japan. My logic was that the more detailed city guide would be of huge benefit in Tokyo with the more general guide useful for wherever else I went… Much to my surprise I managed very well with my Japan guide and did not use the Tokyo one much at all.

Don’t get me wrong, there’s nothing fundamentally wrong about the book – the maps are good (although the subway map was out of date when I used it), there’s enough info about the places to see and quite a bit about the culture and things you should do and things you should not. There’s also a load of hotels and restaurants listed although some of the restaurants seem to have shut down by the time I used the book. It’s just that there’s hardly anything of use in the book which is not covered in the bigger guide to the overall country making it all in all a bit pointless if you have the country guide.

4.0 out of 5 stars Authoritive if you study carefully, 11 Nov 2005
I am planning a trip to Japan next year and I felt I needed a more indepth guide on Tokyo, being the huge place it appears to be, so I brought Lonely Planet Tokyo, the book is good, and very authoritive, it gives names of hotels for different budgets, the best place to eat in Tokyo on a budget, even how to get a free lunch, and what to do, and explains the dangers well (not many in Tokyo though).

But this isn't the sort of guide book you can just glance at and instantly understand it, you've got to almost read the whole chapter to understand where you can get things, etc.

The book could be improved on layout, but on content, you can't beat it.
