Amazon.co.uk Review

When it comes to seeing a country in its true light away from the neon glow of the city, getting off the beaten track is not only desirable--it's essential. Certainly in Spain's case it makes a lot of sense to take to the hills, for while Europe's third largest country may attract 47 million visitors a year, tourists are mostly confined to a few densely populated coastal areas, leaving vast tracts of the Iberian peninsula relatively deserted.

One of Spain's greatest virtues is its amazing variety, whether it be the terrain, climate, dialect, cuisine or the temperament of the local inhabitants. This diversity is admirably represented in Walking in Spain's selection of treks. Will you choose the Galician green fjords in the North West, the arid cliff tops and serene blue waters of the Cabo de Gata in the South East, the inland plains of Castilla, the snow-capped Picosde Europa or the famous pilgrimage of the Camino de Santiago? The book contains many wonderful dilemmas for the aspiring walker.

Every walk is graded for difficulty and each itinerary contains detailed information about distances and times involved, useful landmarks, as well as discussions on the flora and fauna, architecture and history of a region. Walking in Spain makes it easy to leave behind the pollution of the city, abandon your motorised vehicle, fasten your backpack, pull on your boots and set off into the sunset of one of Europe's emptiest and most beautiful lands. -- Tom de Castella

3.0 out of 5 stars Not entirely reliable, 9 Mar 2000
Having attempted 2 of the walks in the Valencia section I have found that there's quite a errors and omissions. This book can only be used as a guide to which walks are available, the maps are not detailed enough to use alone. Anyone walking in Spain should try and buy maps before they visit (as it's a nightmare trying to get them). The map LP recommends for the Sierra de Bernia walk is wrong, which makes me wonder if the authors ever attempted it. This book can point you in the right direction but will require you to do a fair amount of background research yourself, if this doesn't bother you then it's an excellent list of walks.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent detail, 30 April 2002
By A Customer
...I have found the maps and descriptions of the routes followed in the book to be of a high standard. In particular, after walking in Mallorca and buying 2 other speccific books that just covered the island, I found that only LP had reliable maps and descriptions and was the only book I ended up trusting.
Very useful format and includes a lot of details on accomodation and transport.

3.0 out of 5 stars walking in spain, on a tight schedule, 12 Nov 2007

(REAL NAME)
i bought this book on the basis that it would help me plan my walk from Pamplona to Santiago and beyond. it had a schedule of between 20 and 45 km per day. for the unseasoned walker, this was optimistic and unfortunately, there was a heat wave and walking anything above 25km a day was totally rediculous.
there are better guides out there for those who want to set their own pace, want to find out what is beyond the next refugio and what amenities are in the next town and for those who want to enjoy the camino and its people for what it is, its a good place to start, but don't carry the whole book if you only want it for the last 20 pages.
