So many good things, so little space!, 25 Oct 2000

"Now you can be more than the usual tourist - the secret is communication. And this phrasebook is the one to help you do it..." So promised the cover!!! Having just recently spent a summer in Ibiza, this was a parting gift from my Mother and it could not have been better chosen. There is everything you need from the grammatical beginings, explanation of verb conjugations to intimate Spanish phrases to woo the object of your affections!! There are vocab lists and there are sections to get you off to a flying start in almost every conceivable situation; if you are on a brief holiday or when you are on a backpackers tour and the majority of the people you come into contact with are locals who speak nothing other than the native tongue. I found it incredibly exciting to find a phrase to come up with the next time I saw my Spanish colleaugues as the book even has some ready made pearls of wisdom for you. But by the time you have those memorised you will be itching to come up with your own conversational nuggets! Useful sections too on other colloquial tongues; catalan included and enough to get you started in any conversation, all you need is an opinion on the political climate at the time! I cannot say anything bad about this book. I am now a conversational Spanish speaker after only 4 months in Ibiza and this book. I'm off to France for the winter, I can only hope the French version lives up to the reputation and high standard set by this pocket, budding linguists, 'wonder tome'!!!! Buy it, try it, and smile.

I've owned this book for about two years now, and found it useful for my Spanish studies, in class and homework, and having just returned from yet another Spanish trip, this book has it all. There's a nice introduction to grammar for all the grammar freaks out there, but gentle enough to be absorbed by even the most grammar challenged of us. It has a section for just about every conceivable scenario, but the most useful and realistic scenarios. There's a section for the gay traveller, the drug seeker, and the person who likes to swear, the person who likes sex, and then post sex conversation! It’s full of the really useful everyday stuff too, like a great menu decoder, days of the week, how to order a meal or book a hotel room.
With the added extras of Basque, Galician and Catalan, plus a small Spanish to English - English to Spanish dictionary in the back; all this and it fits into your pocket! It's quite humorous little thing, and I really can’t rate this book highly enough.

Inexplicably Informative, 11 April 2009
I can not believe how lonely planet have included so much information in such a small book. It is truly pocket sized and contains everything you need to be understood in Spain and Catalunya and how you can understand their customs. It's also written in such a friendly informal style that you want to keep reading it.
