5.0 out of 5 stars This book can open doors for you, 3 Aug 2001

How many times do you travel around a country without really getting to know the lingo? This book gave me the basic information I needed to get by in Thai from eating out, bargaining, arranging accommodation and making (very basic) conversation. The pronunciation is well explained and whatsmore it fits easily into your day bag. Spend a few minutes a day to learn a new phrase and you'll never look back.

5.0 out of 5 stars Brilliant little book, 3 Jun 2004
What can i say just got back from travelling SE Asia for 9 months excellent book to keep on you especially for those first few days when you just cross into a new country.
Accurate on the whole, although can be a little imprecise but it's small and you can always ask after you've got through the greetings and pleasantries.

Have Fun!

4.0 out of 5 stars Good for the Size BUT, 18 Jun 2005
For a book so slimline it packs a lot of useful phrases in. Handily divided into sections first by Language and then by topics such as Greetings, Getting Around, Food and Health, it's easy to navigate. Each language also contains a very brief guide to pronunciation which I feel could be longer as for someone coming from Europe and thus having a very different alphabet it could be quite hard to get to grips with it. It must be remembered that it is of course basic and contains only essential phrases, but then most of the time that is all you need, so no point weighing luggage down with huge books that won't be used.

Also, I find the Vietnamese section to be especially unhelpful in terms of pronunciation and will probably end up using this section by simply pointing at the right phrase and showing people.

I have awarded 4 stars because if you do not intend to use the Vietnamese section then overall it is a good, compact purchase.
