Product Description

Product Description

"The Avengers" was the 1960s, defining the era with its style, politics and chic. Starting in 1960 as a gritty spy drama, the programme evolved into the hippest, most fondly remembered series of the decade. The first British programme to be networked in the USA, it spawned a hit single, "The New Avengers" and a legacy of writers and directors who went on to shape the next 20 years of TV. For the first time, this book provides a definitive and entertaining reference work on that cult programme. From an episode by episode listing, through interviews with the stars and a discussion of the behind-the-scenes politics, the reader is given an insight into every aspect of the series. The book also details the making of the "Avengers" movie, starring Ralph Fiennes, Uma Thurman and Sean Connery. With its first viewers recruited in 1960, and new enthusiasts added every day through constant repeats on British television, this programme has acquired a huge fan following. This is the definitive reference work which every one of those fans will want to own.

3.0 out of 5 stars Irreverent and amusing but annoyingly inaccurate, 1 April 2000
By A Customer
I did enjoy reading this book because the authors give a personal overview of the series and comment humorously on all aspects from its kinkiness to its history. It's great fun for fans to read and doesn't give away the plot of each episode in the summaries. The reason I haven't given it five stars is because there are literally hundreds of errors, some of which are forgivable and others which simply result from a lack of proof reading and inaccurate quoting. After a while this becomes irritating because the authors simply haven't taken sufficient care to check things before publishing, especially as giving it to any other fan to read would have got rid of half of them. Despite this flaw, however, I highly recommend the book for any Avengers fan and wouldn't dream of watching an ep without it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great fun - change is good!, 7 Jun 2007

(REAL NAME)
I note the comments of the earlier reviewer and agree that there are errors in the text - however, this DOES NOT detract from a fun and very entertaining read. Unless you are bothered that a particular episode actually aired on 26th June and not the 24th- is this likely to bother the casual reader? It is refreshing that it is not just another detailed line by line guide of each episode but a personal interpretation of each episode. This was book was written and should be read, with tongue firmly-in-cheek ie. exactly as the programmes were intended all those years ago - Enjoy!
