Product Description

Review

'Unique and impressive ... draws a fascinating picture of the Shi'ite landscape. Faleh Jabar is uniquely placed to write on modern Iraq.' Sami Zubaida 'The Shi'ite Movement in Iraq is a multi-faceted work, by turns social history and institutional analysis, anthropological inquiry, and theoretical exegesis.' The Daily Star (26/06/04)

Product Description

Shi'i Islam has been the focus of sustained attention since the success of the Iranian revolution in 1979. Yet beyond the Iranian case, the role of Shi'ism in politics across the Middle East has attracted little serious research. Even less attention has been given to Shi'ism and Shi'ite militancy in Iraq - which preceded the Iranian revolution - and less still to their nature and origins; the social movements they engendered; the ideological responses they gave rise to; and their specific sources of power and legitimacy. This book attempts to fill the gap in our understanding of Shi'ite ideology and social and cultural identity in Iraq. It is also a useful resource for analysis of the current conflict in Iraq, as the suppressed, majority Shi'ites are certain to play a crucial role in any future shaping of that country.

4.0 out of 5 stars Iraqi Shi'ism, 17 Sep 2008
Review by Omar Ali Grant
Head of Intra and Interfaith Relations,
Al-Khoei Foundation

I read this book shortly after my return from a year in post war Iraq.By then I was already familiar with much of the history of Shi'a activism and history in Iraq. As a non Shi'a, who was yet acutely aware of Shi'a history and particularism I was able to travel unhindered accross the sectarian divides. The book does indicate that in Baghdad at least the line was very thin and most Iraqis would live with elements of both Sunni and Shi'a practice. While in the southern Shi'a centres of Najaf and Karbala much of the population would actually have marxist roots and Shi'a activism was thus especially geared as a reaction to it and this is most noticeable in the use of common themes of oppression and social activism.
Dr Abdul Jabar is himself an Iraqi and his knowledge of marxist dynamics in the Middle East is unparalled.
The greatest credit for the book in my view, was that even though it was published before the raise to international prominence of Moqtada As-Sadr, it became the first piece of academic writing to recognise him as a major force in the shaping of the future Iraq. At that time no more than a few pages were included in what is now known as the Sadrist movement and thus the book will leave readers eagerly awaiting a sequel.
In short, a good introduction to the history and evolution of Shi'a thought in Iraq and its effect in contemporary events, yet desperately in need of continuing research. I just hope the author is working on a new book to include the latest events.
