5.0 out of 5 stars From the book cover....., 22 Dec 2006

It is a known fact that today butterflies are becoming increasingly scarce, with many endangered and some actually extinct. The main cause of this scarcity is the destruction of habitat, caused primarily by modern agricultural and forestry methods.

One of the best ways to help butterflies survive is to provide adequate habitat in our own gardens. Few things bring more pleasure to many people than their garden. How much greater the joy and satisfaction if as well as being filled with flowers, the garden is alive with butterflies.

Edith Holden, the author of The Country Diary of an Edwardian Lady had a particular fascination for butterflies. She observed them closely as can be seen from her exquisite paintings upon which this book is based.

This is a practical guide to planning and creating a butterfly garden, whether it be in the town or the country. The book shows what flowers to choose, how to grow plants from seed, and gives detailed lists of butterflies, their distribution and habitats. There is also a chapter on useful sources of materials and information and a selected bibliography.

In addition to Edith Holden's paintings there are numerous photographs and a selection of garden plans, all in full colour.
