Synopsis

Celebrating the Great Traditions of Christian Faith, this book builds on the author's previous success and bestsellers, making this title on spiritual renewal is a landmark text on the subject and much in demand. Today a mighty river is bursting forth...It is a deep river of divine intimacy, a powerful river of holy living, a dancing river of jubilation in the Spirit, a broad river of unconditional love for all peoples. The astonishing reality is that this mighty flow brings together streams of life that have been isolated from one another for a very long time. If we want to see this river of life in its most complete form, it is to Jesus we must continually turn. In 'Streams of Living Water,' the Great Traditions of Christian faith unfold: Contemplative the prayer-filled life Holiness the virtuous life Charismatic the Spirit-empowered life Social justice the compassionate life Evangelical the Word-centred life Incarnational the sacramental life Selects and unpacks the best from the different traditions of spiritual writing from within the worldwide church over the centuries.

5.0 out of 5 stars An excellent integral view of Christian spirituality, 4 Feb 2002
By A Customer
Those who have read Foster's masterpiece, 'Celebration of Discipline,' a description of the practice of various aspects of Christian spirituality, will find here a wealth of theoretical and historical background. Foster views the Christian tradition as a confluence of six 'streams' or traditions: 'contemplative' (prayer and meditation), 'holiness' (morality and virtue), 'charismatic' (spiritual gifts and worship), 'social justice' (prophetic), 'evangelical' (hearing and sharing God's word) and 'incarnational' (faith in everyday life). He illustrates these streams by reference to movements and figures throughout the history of the Church - there is an excellent biographical appendix describing around 200 key figures - and shows how they can be practised (and integrated) in contemporary Christian life. I have made much use of this material as a national church officer responsible for the development of spirituality.
