Review

'I think Catscape is really good...' --Hannah de Angelis, Broughton High, Teen Titles magazine, 2006 'If you live near Stockbridge AND you are a cat lover, then you have to read this book...I really enjoyed the plot and would recommend it to younger readers.' --Hannah Jones, Broughton High, Teen Titles magazine, 2006 'A well-paced, entirely convincing mystery novel, full of suspense, wit and unexpected twists and turns. Beautifully written in a clear, accessible style with plenty of direct speech and detailed description, it is an excellent, gripping yarn for anyone over 9 years old.' -- School Librarian, Spring 2006 'This delightful, whimsical story will appeal to children of all ages. It is well written without being condescending, and the plot is unusual and quite gripping.' -- Stockbridge & New Town Independent, November 2005 'I thought the story was great. My favourite character was Jessie. I would definitely recommend it to my friends because it is such a good book. I would love to read another story about Jessie, Murdo and Fergus.' -- Annie, age 8, Peebleshire, Scotland. 'A ripping yarn and beautifully plotted. A real boys-own adventure story.' -- Catherine Forde, author of Fat Boy Swim

Product Description

Fergus can't believe it when his brand-new digital watch starts going backwards. Then he crashes (literally) into gadget-loving Murdo and a second mystery comes to light: cats are going missing all over the neighbourhood. This book is the winner of the Kelpies Prize 2005. Sharply and wittily observed, it's a story of unlikely friendships, unexpected allies and cat surveillance.

5.0 out of 5 stars The best book I've read, 4 Dec 2005
By Grace (Melrose,) - See all my reviews
I loved Catscape, It’s the best book I’ve read. The story is an exiting mystery adventure of missing cats and watches going backwards but in an ordinary place with ordinary people. I loved the main two characters Murdo and Fergus, especially that they didn’t know each other to start with but soon became best friends and a good team. I also liked that Jessie the old lady was adventurous and did karate. The exiting chapter headings just made me want to keep reading. I think this book is great for boys and girls aged about 8 up.

3.0 out of 5 stars Catscape- Edinburgh's newest crime fighting team, 18 Oct 2005
By Chris (Edinburgh) - See all my reviews
I enjoyed reading this, but I think it's aimed at someone about thirteen or under. Seeing the world through the eyes of Fergus is always amusing. Apart from his crazy escapades with the eccentric Murdo (which are never ordinary), there are his witty comments on what's happening around him in his Edinburgh neighbourhood. Although mainly aimed at children, older people would enjoy reading along with them (or sneaking it after their kids go to bed!).
The plot moves at a steady pace, never with a dull moment, and with plenty of 'oh no!' moments. I think it captures the feel of a quiet Edinburgh neighbourhood, a wide variety of characters and crazy goings on! A good story, that appeals to me, and I think kids would enjoy it too, for the energy and laughs that it has to offer! Nice one!
