Product Description
Sam just wants to be left alone to play with his game console, as yet another boring holiday with his parents looms ahead. But within days of arriving in Dorset, Sam has been chased by huge cats and then inadvertently woken the sleeping Druid, Amergin, who has been asleep for nine hundred years. Told that he possesses great power, suddenly Sam finds himself involved in a timeless fight against the evil known as 'the Malifex'. At first Sam refuses to accept what is happening to him, but when his parents are also affected by the Malifex's evil he agrees to help, aided by Amergin, and his new friend Charly, whose mother, Megan, is a modern-day witch. Sam's holiday soon turns into a race against time to find the Tear of the Sun, the Helm of Herne and the Spear of Destiny, before the Malifex can use them for his own evil intentions. Filled with riddles, wizards, spells and adventure, The Malifex will keep readers hooked until the very end.

4.0 out of 5 stars An enjoyable, traditional tale of good versus evil, 21 Feb 2002
By A Customer
This is an enjoyable, traditional tale of magic, and good versus evil, in the manner of Alan Garner and Susan Cooper, with Green Men and Herne the Hunter stalking the English landscape. I thought the handling of dialogue particularly good and fluent, and also liked the evocation of the Dorset landscape. There are a number of sly references to popular film, which might be more obvious to adults than children!

5.0 out of 5 stars A fantastic book - gripping to the end, 14 Feb 2002
By A Customer
Not being one for fantasy novels, I didn't expect to enjoy this book but how wrong I was! The story is told through the eyes of a young boy, and Alton has managed to do what few writers can, which is write utterly convincingly from a child's perspective. I recognised myself (and my siblings) in Sam and through him became hooked on the story from the first page. I would definitely recommend this to anyone, whether interested in 'magic' or not. I'm already looking forward to the sequel!

5.0 out of 5 stars Magic, mythology and more than a hint of mirth..., 28 Mar 2002
By A Customer
I read this book in one sitting - I simply couldn't put it down. Although aimed at teenagers, it has plenty to interest and involve the adult reader. The plot is driven at a cracking pace by the excellent dialogue, particularly between Sam and Charly. Educational, informative and entertaining - highly recommended.
