Product Description

Synopsis

Offering an activity-based introduction to geography, this series introduces concepts gradually and simply, and supports them with activities which aim to be both easy and enjoyable - from building a gushing geyser and making a sundial to designing a Treasure Island map. Panel boxes provide real-life analogies, such as showing how toffee sets hard to illustrate how lava turns to rock. Focusing on rivers and oceans, this book starts with a description of the different forms of water in the world, and introduces the water cycle. Among the specific topics covered are the various stages in the life of a river, with a feature page on the Nile; the currents, waves and tides of oceans and seas; underground rivers; lakes; and water pollution. The activities include measuring the speed of a river's current and making a water filter.

4.0 out of 5 stars One of four lively books providing a practical, hands-on approach to Geography, 1 Mar 2007

(TOP 50 REVIEWER)
'This book tells you about rivers, lakes and oceans and how they shape the land. It also has lots of ideas for projects and things to look out for.
You should be able to find nearly everything you need to do the projects around the home. You may need to buy some items, but they are all cheap and easy to find. Be careful when you are studying a river out of doors. Do not go near rivers, lakes or any open water on your own - always go with an adult.'

In large paperback format this book has 32 glossy, high quality pages and is illustrated throughout in full colour.
Split into 15 handy sized chapters:-

Water in Our World
The Water Cycle
Water Under the Ground
Rivers of Ice
River Sources
Rivers at Work
Rushing Rivers
Winding Rivers
The Nile
Lakes
Oceans and Seas
Waves, Currents and Tides
Waves at Work
Water Pollution
Amazing Rivers and Oceans

and a full index.

DIY information pages include making your own stalactites and stalagmites, growing plants in a bottle and make your own river and see how it carves out a path downhill.
