Product Description

In 1985, Mal Duff led an expedition to conquer the unclimbed north-east ridge of Everest. Chis Bonnington's previous attempt had ended with the death of two climbers. This book chronicles the assault on the peak and the relationships of the 19 very different individuals in the team.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great!, 5 May 2000
By A Customer
This book is really beautifully written! I almost read it in one go and found it hard to put down even when finished, as you really get dragged into the story. Greig is a great writer, who was invited by Mal Duff to come along and write a book about his Everest NorthEast-ridge expedition. I love climbing books, but I wish they were all so well-written. Read his first expedition-book (Summit Fever) as well, it's equally great!

4.0 out of 5 stars the sultans of pain, 25 Oct 2006
By M. R. Grange "MatteusTI" (London, UK) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
An interesting and 'inside' look at one of the less well known expeditions in climbing lore, in the dying days of non-commercial Himalayan climbing. Fresh from a successful small scale ascent of the Mustagh Towers, writer Andrew Greig is invited on an attritional expedition to the unclimbed and immensely difficult NorthEast ridge of Everest by Scottish climbing legend Mal Duff.
Unlike any of the other climbing books I've ever read, this one manages to convey the seesawing boredom, pain, camaraderie, frustration and immense hard work of climbing a big peak 'siege style' with no Sherpas. Make no mistake, this kind of climbing is not for the fainthearted and unfit. Just planning the logistics and financing is an immense task, full of gambles and uncertainties. It contains few 'big names' (except for Tullis and Diemberger doing the filming) and really conveys the sense of an 'individualistic community' in the climbing world. Poignantly, it is also interwoven with the 1982 loss of Peter Boardman and Joe Tasker on the same route, something which is subtly there in everyone's minds throughout the book.
