5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent, 22 Dec 2000
A trully thoughtful historical novel that brings the civil war to life. Unusually for historical novels the characters even seem to think in a nineteenth century way - this isn't simply a group of modern characters wearing period costume.

5.0 out of 5 stars A detailed and immensley powerful account of the battle, 17 Jun 2000
By kingwk@supanet.com (Warminster, Wilts) - See all my reviews
This is a classic story showing the battle from the perspective of the field commanders on both sides. The way the author has projected the abilities and failings of these soldiers is nothing short of inspired. A brilliant book from a brilliant author.

5.0 out of 5 stars This is a great story..., 8 Jun 2000
By A Customer
As a casual Civil War enthusiast, I've read several accounts of Gettysburg over the years. But if I would recommend just one book to anyone, regardless of their knowledge of the Civil War, "Killer Angels" is it. While it might make the strict historian squeamish because of the creative liberties Shaara takes with the personalities of those involved in the conflict, I wouldn't argue that indeed this is often dangerous. However I imagine this is how history is really taught: Great, true stories. America is still and likely will always be a country with a distinct North and South, and this is a great story on why that is. If you've dug deep enough into "Killer Angels" to find this review, then read it: It is one of the best Civil War historical novels out there.

I am not really a big fan of historical novels, preferring to read actual histories as opposed to 'fictional' accounts of actual events. Read more
