All the children at Port-na-Sgadan school hate Su because she is from the Big House. All that is except Winkie, the fisherman's son, amd together he and Su become involved in a dangerous mission to rescue the magic piper from the clutches of the evil fairy prince. To fail in their quest would mean destruction and ruin for all future generationms of the Big House and the children's own imprisonment in the cruel fairy world. To succeed Winkie and Su must employ the help of a brounie, a magic dirk, a priest and the despised gypsy folk but above all they must rely upon their own wits.
