5.0 out of 5 stars The best and most entertaining explanation of Zen in English, 5 Aug 2004
Brad Warner's book contains the best explanation (and one of the the most humourous) of Zen that I have read in the English language. He captures the essence of the key concepts very well and with great accuracy. Behind the ex-punk rocker and party animal is a man of great intelligence and thoughtfulness who has achieved a good understanding of an oriental philosophy that has baffled generations of pretentious intellectuals. The whole point about Zen is that it is anti-intellectual (the whole goal is to baffle the intellect and achieve direct seeing!)

The chapter about the Heart Sutra is slightly off the mark in a couple of places and is a little short on clarity in a couple more places (for example, it would be have been helpful to readers to explain that the Heart Sutra is not actually recited/chanted in Japanese but in Sino-Japanese, and that the untranslated Sanskrit chant at the end is actually read "gyaate gyaate hara gyaate" (go,go,go to the other side!) - a reference to the crossing into Nirvana) - but this is a mere quibble in what is a very entertaining read. Brad Warner has done a great service in bringing some key Zen concepts to a wider audience. I admire his ability to stick at it - I tried for years in the 1970s to try and figure it all out and finally realised that there was nothing to figure out (is this enlightenment?) - besides, the "zazen" was killing my knees (although I enjoyed the quiet and peace of the temple - in Nagoya)!

5.0 out of 5 stars The Best so far, 11 Mar 2007
By Mr. Gavin Strathie (London) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
after 20 years of zen practice this is quite simply the best i've read. Warner is a student of Nishijima who translated the "shobogenzo," which is widely regarded as the most astounding testament to zen in the world written by Dogen Zenji - the frst patriarch of Japanese Zen. Brad's book is refreshingly irreverent, dispensing with the usual endless diatribes on traditional practise. It's very down to earth and extremey accessible. warner inter-mingles his own autobiographical experiences with an unidentifiable leaning towards meditation - he doesn't know why he's doing it - he just has to. he almost reluctantly describes his "enlightenment" experience, despite slagging off Kapleau for doing the same and then suggests that it is accessible for everyone as long as you do enough zazen. Fine. He's wrong - for whatever reason, not everyone experiences what he has experienced but thats OK .This is the most honest and dogma free book on zen I've ever read. Even if you're not a Buddhist, you should give this a go.

I've just had to update this review after reading an article on Warner's website in which he apologises for including what people (including me) called his "enlightenment experience." He says it's a result of his bad writing and that he's never had an "experience," as such,it was just a point in time where he kind of "got" what it was all about! So I take it all back! Sorry Brad.

5.0 out of 5 stars the real deal, 5 Jun 2006
this book is the real deal - it demystifies buddhist philosophy and practice and makes a great change from the usual incomprehensible high-minded waffle. i love this book and cannot recommend it highly enough.
