2.0 out of 5 stars British Magic Mushrooms, 10 Aug 2003
This is a 32 page A5 booklet giving information on British hallucinogenic mushroom species. It has some good colour photos of Psilocybe semilanceata. The other species are only given line drawings which in practice are of little use. The book provides details on ten psilocybin mushrooms and two species of psychotropic Amanita. The ten listed kinds of psilocybe mushroom includes Stropharia and Panaeolus species, which are erroneously considered to have a "latent" ability to produce psilocybin. The book also gives details on Hypholoma cyanescens which is only found in North Africa (classified now as Psilocybe mairei). It seems the author confused this species for Psilocybe cyanescens which can be found in Britain. The dosage information given for P.semilanceata is so wrong it's potentially dangerous. The section on law is poorly researched. This book is highly inaccurate and I would instead recommend "Magic Mushrooms Around the World" by Jochen Gartz. It gives good info relevant to species found in Britain.

1.0 out of 5 stars Not that good, 21 Aug 2002
By kio (England) - See all my reviews
The book is (obviously) a guide to British hallucinogenic mushrooms. It covers most things you would want to know - species descriptions, advice on hunting them, chemistry, preparation, dosage and law.

The information is very inaccurate. Of the 10 supposed psilocybin mushroom species it includes in the book only two of the species are actually hallucinogenic, and one of those two isn't found in Britain. The dosage information given is seriously wrong, it suggests that 5 grams of psilocybe semilanceata will contain an average of 6mg of alkaloids, "an active dose". Five grams of that species will in reality contain 60mg of alkaloids, in my own words "enough to blow your ******* mind to the Moon and back". This is just one of it's many errors.

Anyone interested in magic mushrooms should buy Paul Stamets "Psilocybin Mushrooms of the World" and also a good British field guide such as "Mushrooms and other fungi of Great Britain & Europe" by Roger Phillips (which Amazon.co.uk sell for a good price) Those two books will give you good reliable information.

"A Guide to British Psilocybin Mushrooms" will not.

5.0 out of 5 stars Very decriptive and diagrams are very easy to understand, 16 Aug 2000
By A Customer
If you are out on a mushroom trek its advisable to have some sort of field guide to refer to as there are so many more poisonus mushrooms than there are psyco-active ones . Richard Cooper goes through the stages with you in a serious but yet very easy to understand way and the diagrams for identification are extremely good . There are also a couple of coloured photo's just to let you know what they look like in their natural state and what they look like after having been picked a couple of hours. Cooper also goes through the law aspect of mushroom cultivation and the best way to collect and dry your pickings. HAVE A NICE TRIP.
