4.0 out of 5 stars Non Stop Gracie, 21 Nov 2001
I was thrilled to read all about Gracie Fields,in a book telling us warts and all,and its hard to believe her voice was so pure for so long,in a life of ups and downs, showing an energy as grest as that voice.I would have liked to have read why she never gave the Opera stage a miss, what a gem that would have been, and wonder how she found Maria Callas when they were on the Onassis yacht. When visiting Capri I was shocked to hear that her financiers created a huge problem before she died, because of not paying her tax to the Italian government,I would liked to have known when this was sorted out,as her home was boarded up when I visited, and left us all in our group very depressed indeed. The thought of all her earnings creating a problem,is quite dreadful, and one can only hope the guide who told us about it,got his facts wrong.I am sure accountants etc were well paid to look after her affairs.Nevertheless the book was a must read for all Gracie's fans.

3.0 out of 5 stars Would have liked a bit more., 3 Oct 2009
Gracie Fields was the Rochdale born mill worker who made it big in variety and Hollywood with one of the most famous voices of the early to mid twentieth century. This biography was the first and to date the only `authorized' biography of the singer. The coverage of the book is adequate giving equal weight to all stages of her life rather than just focussing on her hey day in the 1930s and 1940s which is a positive.

The writing style, however, is sometimes a little disjointed and occasionally characters appear without much context such that you feel you may have skipped a section earlier in the book, only to look back and find that you haven't. For example Gracie's final husband Boris Alperovici suddenly appears on the scene as a long time resident of the island of Capri, Gracie's much loved Italian residence, and within a couple of pages they are an item. That is by no means the only example. More scene setting and character narrative would have made this much more of an enjoyable biography, in other words one feels a couple hundred pages somehow got lost in the editing process. That said a perfectly ok read.
