Product Description

Review
Ne Arthur Stanley Jefferson in Ulverston, Lancashire, Laurel began his career as an English music hall performer before enjoying moderate two-reeler success as a young vaudevillian and pantomimist in the States. Teamed with Oliver (Babe) Hardy in 1926 by Leo McCarey at Hal Roach Studios, the thin half and "more fully creative member of that partnership" abandoned his still warm director's chair to act and also devise many of those classic L&H gags. McCabe, the author of Mr. Laurel and Mr. Hardy and his subject's literary executor, was privy to not only personal interviews and recollections in the form of homage, but also some quintessentially hilarious sketches Laurel wrote for the couple's stage tours abroad. Still, Laurel, "a man who existed almost solely for laughter," will no doubt live longest via his re-runs. (Kirkus Reviews)

5.0 out of 5 stars A comic legend, 27 Aug 2005
By Babe (Lancashire, United Kingdom) - See all my reviews
A delightful read! A must have for every Laurel and Hardy fan. McCabe writes of Stan's childhood in the North Shields, there is also a lengthy piece of text written by Stan Laurel's father, during their tour of England in 1932. The book continue's into a wonderful insight into Laurel's landing in America, then still in Vaudeville, into the flickers. His teaming with Babe Hardy in 1926 and great recollections by the two men themselves as to how they made their pictures, and how Laurel thought up those gags. A small part of the book is dedicated to Laurels private life but McCabe keeps it respectful and sweet. This book is a joy to read, it also contains papers that Stan wrote just before he died on how he was still writing gags for Stan and Ollie after Hardy's death. They are delightful! This book should be treasured as should the memory of the legend on which it was based.
