If you want to know what W.S. Gilbert wrote apart from the Gilbert and Sullivan operas, this is an excellent place to start. This book collects together some of his best stories--wildly funny, melodramatic, sometimes dark. Unfortunately Peter Haining's Introduction is ill-informed and full of bad mistakes. He misdates at least five of the stories--"The Finger of Fate" dates from 1872, not 1890!--and "The Poisoned Postage Stamp" is not by Gilbert at all, but by Tom Hood. However, the stories themselves are always inventive, with flashes of the absurd humour of the G&S operas. Gilbert's uniquely dry voice works better in the comic stories than the melodramatic ones, but there is much to enjoy in this collection.
