Product Description

Review
"In addition to providing the first real scholarly treatment of the subject, Nicholas Orme''s work also raises a number of questions which should inspire local researchers........Professor Orme has produced a masterly study of a neglected subject for which he is to be congratulated. The value for local historians in Cornwall and Devon is immense, and hopefully this book will inspire more detailed country studies eslewhere. It richly deserves a place on all serious local historian''s bookshelves alongside Dr. Oliver Padel''s Cornish Place Names which it complements so well." -Cornwall Association

Product Description
People assume that parish church dedications are ancient, but many of those in use today are inventions of the 18th and 19th centuries, and the original dedications were entirely different. This volume offers information about the history of English parish churches, providing an aspect on religion in England in all periods of history. Part One of the book gives a general history of Church dedications in England, from Roman times to the present day. Part Two provides a gazetteer of dedications in Cornwall and Devon, with dates and references, showing how far each one can be traced back, and what changes and misunderstandings have occurred. It offers evidence about the Cornish saints, and aims to provide a guide and model for similar research in other counties.

4.0 out of 5 stars A different perspective on English church history., 12 Jan 2000
By A Customer
This groundbreaking work takes as its subject the church dedications of Devon and Cornwall, and shows convincingly that the results apply across all of England. Orme's central thesis is that the dedications of English parish churches are not necessarily those of the churches before the Reformation. In many cases, they are; but in perhaps 60% of cases there is reason for doubt. He investigated pre-Reformation dedications by exploring early wills and land documents referring to churches, and for about a third of the churches in Devon he found that t6he modern dedication was different to the pre-Reformation dedication. The main reason for this is that dedications fell into disuse after the Reformation, and were lost for more than 200 years. They remained in common usage in towns, where parishes often retained their pre-Reformation name ; for instance, Dowsing visiting Ipswich in 1644 mentions 'Ellens church' (St Helens) and 'Mary Stoke' (St Mary at Stoke). But out in the countryside, churches were usually referred to by the name of their village, a situation that persists today. The dedications were 'rediscovered' by 18th century antiquarians, who were more enthusiastic than accurate. When the Anglican revival in the 19th century attempted to restore a sense of catholicity to parish churches, the reintroduction of dedications was an essential part of this. Unfortunately, though not unreasonably, they mostly used the work of the 18th century antiquarians. Orme suggests that medieval dedications were made for a variety of reasons; a local hero, the special devotion of a patron, the consecration of the church on a particular feast day - even, the relic that the church had obtained to seal in its altar. Orme says that churches that had obtained several relics of minor saints (usually because they were cheaper) were usually dedicated to All Saints. In addition, most churches would have contained shrines to other saints, and even aisles with formal dedications.

Orme thinks that there must once have been many more churches dedicated to St Thomas Becket, a cult vigorously excised at the Reformation. Churches dedicated today to St Mary would almost certainly have had a pre-Reformation dedication to a particular solemnity; the Assumption was very popular, and the Anglican church at Ufford in Suffolk has successfully had this original dedication restored by its Anglo-catholic congregation. This is a book which changes one's perspective, in the sense that it is probably something you have never thought about before. The sense of permanency engendered by the English parish church is shaken slightly, and the world is no longer as you thought it was.
