Review
'Have you ever forgotten that battle at Lochy, When we with our blades mowed you down like oats standing? And likewise Auldearn where our mighty MacColla Left your hero from Lawers lying lifeless and silent, That rebel from hell with his regiment accurst! You scattered and fled like sheep from a martin, On the day of Kilsyth your panic was fearful... We left not alive a single survivor Of the breed of MacCailean we met in that battle...' - Alexander MacDonald

Product Description
In 1644 James Grahame, Marquis of Montrose, stormed his way into legend with a series of astonishing victories over the Covenanters. At his side stalked a shadowy but terrible ally - Alasdair MacColla, who had a far more ancient agenda of his own. MacColla's aim was nothing less than the effective destruction of the power of Clan Campbell and its replacement by the older overlordship of the Macdonalds. MacColla was the first - and perhaps the last - great Celtic general of modern times, who lived at a dynamic time which saw the increasingly forgotten and marginalised Gaelic speaking peoples of Scotland and Ireland nearly succeed in regaining control of their lands and destiny. The author argues that it was in fact MacColla and not Montrose who was the true architect of the 'Year of Victories', and that without his Highland ally, Montrose's blunders would have doomed him to disaster, thus presenting a compelling and radical reappraisal of Scottish history during the crucial years of the 1640s. As MacColla's actions were unwittingly to lead his people and culture to ruin, so his own career ended in chaos when, despite leading his own troops in a victorious charge, an incompetent general led him to defeat and death at Knocknanuss in Ireland. Superbly written, Highland Warrior is a compelling and dramatic sweep through some of the most eventful years in Scottish history, told in a text both authoritative and highly readable.

4.0 out of 5 stars New Perspective, 23 April 2009
By Mr. R. Macdonald (Highlands, Scotland) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
'Highland Warrior' by David Stevenson is a refreshing look at the civil wars in Scotland from the point of view of Alasdair MacDonald or 'MacColla', Lieutenant General in the army of James Graham or 'The Great Montrose'. Whereas most histories tend to cast Montrose in the heroic and 'genius' mold, this book re-examines the evidence available to give a more realistic appraisal of both Montrose and MacColla as battlefield commanders. The book is unique in that it is the only available biography of a man who has been much neglected and underrated by modern day historians.

David Stevenson gives us a thorough insight into the political climate of Scotland before, during and after the civil wars and what caused the remarkable change in Highlanders' attitudes towards the Stuart monarchy from resistance during the reign of James VI to risking their lives for James VII. For the most part the story is told within the context of the Clan Donald and it's role during this period, focusing especially on the Colonsay branch of that clan (of which Alasdair was a part)which had long been at loggerheads with the expanding Campbell clan.

The commonly accepted view of Alasdair during this period is essentially that he was the muscle to complement the brain and tactical acumen of Montrose who's abilities are almost hero-worshipped. George Wishart, a past historian on the subject described Alasdair as, "..a brave man, but readier with his hands than his head".

Stevenson argues that MacColla was in fact an excellent leader of men and also very tactically astute. Auldearn is used as a prime example of possible misconceptions many hold of the royalist leaders where the supposed 'trap' set by Montrose was, according to Stevenson, a nineteenth century fantasy, used to hide the fact that he had not in fact deployed his troops or scouts properly. Alasdair was left to defend the royal army's position- heavily outnumbered- and still had the presence of mind to raise the royal army's standard and therefore divert the attention of Hurry away from the royalist camp where nobody (including Montrose) was prepared for battle. Stevenson's conclusions are based on careful examination of the ground and the use of eye-witness accounts and past texts on the battle. This is just one of several instances the author uses to demonstrate Montrose's flaws and to give a more realistic assesment of Alasdair's abilities.

That Alasdair mounted a sustained attack and in fact conquered the supposedly 'impregnable' Campbell lands with it's mighty clan is described in detail by Stevenson and lends credence to his argument that Alasdair was in fact a very capable commander.

The author also argues however that the route Alasdair led his followers down was ultimately their undoing and led to the extinction of the Colonsay branch of the Clan Donald. Again, the recurring theme of Stuart monarchs letting down their faithful followers comes to the fore.

This book sheds light on a previously murky character and balances out histories which overplay Montrose's own achievements and military prowess. It is a highly readable and entertaining study with a wealth of evidence to tell the story of MacColla and put forward the author's views persuasively. A superb addition to a growing collection of studies on this period.
