Product Description

Product Description

THIS IS THE story of the communities and people of Harris in history and legend. One of the largest and most famous of all the islands of Scotland, astonishingly little has been written about the varied and eventful life of Harris, perhaps because the island has been so self contained. Including much material on the now deserted islands around Harris, including new information on St Kilda, Bill Lawson's book is the first modern account of Harris and those who have shaped its history over thousands of years.

About the Author

BILL LAWSON QUALIFIED in law and surveying from Glasgow. He then helped found the surveying course at then then Paisley College of Technology, where he was head of department for seventeen years. He then became Project Team Leader for the Integrated Development Programme for the Western Isles. He then developed his interest in genealogy by setting up Co Leis Thu in Leverburgh, Harris where he and his wife Chris began producing their well-known series of Croft Histories. The growth of the business led to it being handed over to the specially created Northton Heritage Trust. Bill Lawson is one of the best known figures on the Western Isles. Having produced thirty-five books and seven leaflets, few know more about the history and legends of the Outer Isles.

5.0 out of 5 stars Brilliant book , 14 Aug 2007

I read this book in a day, whilst doing some research on my family tree. For anyone who has any connections with the Isle of Harris, this is a great "walk through" most of the villages and outlines a number of the names and families that have lived in the area, as well as giving local history and interesting stories. It's a great research tool and I'd recommend it to anyone with any Hearach connections
