5.0 out of 5 stars The Old Fim. Sectarianism, sport and society in Scotland., 31 Jul 2002
It is often impossible when reading about the Old Firm, to find a book which is not biased towards either Rangers or Celtic, however Bill Murray writes a fantastic balanced history of the two sides. Starting off when the teams were founded this book takes you not just through a hitory of the Old Firm but a history of Scotland as a society. This book takes us through a journey or over 100 years from the men who built both these teams to fans who could break them. an extremely in-depth account of a subjct which stirs such passion and hatred across the world

Is football just a game? Not when these two teams are involved, buy it and find out why.

2.0 out of 5 stars The Old Firm and its place in Glasgow's social history, 22 Jan 2005
By A Customer
As a lifelong Rangers supporter, I enjoy reading about the history and development of the club and I particularly enjoy an un-biassed view which discusses the past and includes reference to Celtic. This book achieves that "middle way" but takes up acres of print on the interesting but over-emphasised social development of Glasgow and the west of Scotland with the football clubs being of secondary interest. The suspicion is that the title and cover picture are little more than bait to sell another copy of the book to a football fan. Each chapter of the book has a lengthy list of footnotes often exceeding 50 and continual need to turn pages to refer to them becomes tedious. Many of the footnotes only give reference to the source of a quotation which adds nothing to the content.

The book may be a good commentary on the past and may even be the most accurate of its type but it is not easy reading and unless the reader is a social historian, this book is not for the average (or even above-average) football supporter.

5.0 out of 5 stars Sectarianism, sport and Scottish cultural and social history. , 15 April 2006
By Stephen Mann "Braveheart" (West Central Scotland - where else?) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
Given ongoing developments within UEFA's investigation into sectarian singing by Glasgow Rangers fans at the recent last 16 round of Champions League games.

This book is something that every Old Firm fan should read!

If they read the true essence of this work, then they will learn something about how ridiculous some peoples antagonism and 'hatred' of one another really is. Perhaps they will then understand that sectarianism is intolerable and will be able to influence and put down those idiots that go along to support their beloved teams only to shout obscenities to all that oppose them on the field of play. Football can indeed seem more important than life or death, but come on let's get real and think Scottish - it's only a game!

A previous reviewer misses the point that the front cover aims to sell the work to Old Firm football fans - yes of course it does labour the point of the imagery as a marketing tool - and why not!

To those who are unaware, this publication is a second edition of a highly acclaimed study of the roots of why so-called 'ordinary' Scottish people turn into the venom, sick and scum of sectarian bigots in relation to the football club they support.

I hope lots of people purchase or at least read this book. It is an impartial study into a blot on the Scottish landscape, that has been ignored or worse still - we have grown accustomed to it!

Glasgow is a Scottish city home to two of the 'greatest' football clubs on the planet. I wish the Old Firm would revisit their roots and discover that the were both formed to play football. As I said before, get real and think Scottish! We are supposed to be a forward looking, forward thinking, tolerant, pluralistic society that looks out for one another. Its about time that some people did this and keep the rivalry and competitiveness to the footballers on the pitch!

Buy or at least read the book! What have you got to lose - you might learn something new?
