Product Description

Product Description

Parents are increasingly concerned not so much about educational issues as behavioural ones, and don't know where to turn for advice. Schools are under growing pressure to provide support, information and reassurance on a wide range of subjects from keeping rooms tidy to explaining national disasters such as the July 2005 bombings in London. This book explains how to talk to children up to the age of 11. It provides practical, easy to use, non-judgmental guidance as to how parents should address today's complex challenges as they strive to make sense of the world for their young children. Issues covered include: faiths, beliefs and myths; rights and respect for others; milestones - birthdays, moving house, starting school; practical matters and house rules - going out alone, mobile phones, pocket money, pets; behaviour - telling the truth, stealing; family relationships and issues, including disability; dealing with emotions, including fears; health, safety and hygiene; and the wider world - conservation, global warming, poverty, privilege.

5.0 out of 5 stars First Time Parent, 11 Feb 2007
As a first time parent I have found Penny Oates' book to be invaluable in guiding me through some sticky situations - and this was only in the last couple of days! The book is usefully broken down so you can pick and choose helpful instructions to help you communicate with your children about a whole range of issues.

Many books that sell themselves as providing advice on talking to children often appear far too dictatorial and it was a pleasure to finally find one that really enabled me to have a construction dialogue with my daughter.

1.0 out of 5 stars Don't bother. Not helpful at all., 11 Oct 2009
By Joe (UK) - See all my reviews
DO NOT get this book unless you :
- like reading everything in bullet format
- like reading a collection of pamplets (like the type you get in doctor surgery) about how to talk to your child.
- need to get to sleep real quick
- like to be spoken "at" not spoken "to"
- you need to pass some test on "how to talk to your child" and this book will provide you with all the correct answers for the test
- you need to advice other parents to how to talk to their child, with the aim that the advice will not take too long to be lectured to the parent.
- you need to give a presentation or lecture on the topic "how to talk to your child", just transfer the short sentences to your presentation program/software.
- do not really wish to truly understand your child
- do not wish in depth understanding, just a bunch of theories and solutions in bullet format.

Totally unhelpful. I found this book uninteresting and boring. Not for a parent truly in need for some practical advice and understanding on how to talk to their child.
